I have been to the Double Windsor a few times now, and overall I would say it's a pretty nice place.
When you walk in, you are welcomed by a cozy atmosphere that isn't trying to hard, although the chairs are pretty high on the rustic scale in that you may want to make sure the structural integrity is there before you put your whole weight into one of them. The seating is communal, so if you are a big group there is a decent amount of space to accomodate you. If you are by yourself, feel comfy grabbing a seat next to a stranger as the environment lends itself well to social interaction over somewhat loud music.
The selection of beverages is pretty large, although in my dealings I have opted for various tasty beers. Service was adequate, as in I ordered a drink, they gave it to me, and I paid for it. I didn't need a secret handshake, if you are wondering. One time I got a glass with a crack in it, but they were happy to replace it before I wound up with a mouth full of glass shards.
The food (cash only) is pretty great, from what I have had. The portions leave you feeling like you got your money's worth, and the quality of food is high. I have tried the burger (was juicy and tasty), the catfish sandwich (very good but spicy), and the pulled pork sandwich, which had a very nice sweet tang taste that impressed. People spoke highly of it to me, and it lived up to my expectations. The fries were bountiful and were well balanced in texture. The wings were also nice and crispy with a lot of flavor that made them pretty addictive, and the farro salad was a lot better than I expected, with a very healthy portion size.
All of the times I have gone have been in not quite peak times so I haven't had to deal with a packed house. It has been a nice place to meet up with a few friends, but I'd imagine it would also be a great place to get awkward with some strangers in an adult version of a first day of class with...
Read moreI used to live in the neighborhood and would come here often for the curds and beer. I was meeting a friend tonight and was sitting with him when the bar tender took his order and then went on to serve other customers. The bar was busy but after a few minutes of her serving new customers I waived - I had my jacket on and guessed she thought I was on my way out. She came over and said “I see you” in a quite unpleasant manner. I asked for a beer and she dropped it down said $9. Did not ask if I wanted a tab opened, tapped my card without a word and threw the card on the bar forcefully.
I must say I was shocked by this behavior as was my friend, who is a regular at the bar. My friend got a second drink but I really I was nervous about even being there at that point.
I understand that it’s difficult for people to work in these busy environments but the bar tender was pleasant to everyone. I don’t really know the point of writing this. I come over Brooklyn often enough but I don’t think I’d go back just to turn around at the door if this bartender is...
Read moreWas this hidden gem of a gastropub named for the snuggest necktie knot known to man? Or is it a play on the sans-sign craft bar's unique location, nestled on the border of Windsor Terrace and Park Slope? You'll have plenty of fuel to ponder this and other of life's most important questions as you enjoy a pint from one of the most robust, rare, and consistently rotated craft beer menus in all of Brooklyn. Wash down your 2-year aged Mikkeller IPA with a deep fried chicken sandwich, smothered in buttermilk dressing and pickled jalapenos, so delicious it would make even the sacrificial clucker shed a tear (that is, if zombie fowl could cry). With an entire menu culled from locally-sourced ingredients (including a Pat LaFrieda-blend grass-fed burger), a laidback, young crowd, events almost every night of the week, and a great view of Prospect Park, there's no better place to get your craft beer fix on. Only downside is the bar is cash-only, but they make up for it with 2 happy hours (12 - 4, and midnight - whenever)...
