Visited Sweetory this afternoon because my friends and I were craving an icy dessert. The shop is at basement level, so you have to walk down some stairs to find it. Cute and cozy decorations indoors and outdoors. There's a small bench right outside the entrance that would fit a max of 2-3 people if you want to hang there. Indoors, there's room for about three groups of 2-3 people in the seating area.
Sweetory's desserts range from $5.50-12. They also sell crafted drinks, such as cheese foam tea, bubble tea, and slushes. My friends have visited this establishment a couple of times already and have tried the mixed OD Toast and multiple bubble tea drinks. The OD Toast was just alright to them, but they like the bubble tea and bingsoos here. Bingsu options were mango, strawberry, lychee, matcha red bean, and milo volcano, all $12 each. The milo volcano looked sweet and enticing, but we opted for the matcha red bean bingsu, something more refreshing. It was made of sweet red bean, matcha sauce, and condensed milk on shaved ice, topped with whipped cream and a mint leaf. Although not the same as the bingsoos in Korean cafes (the ice wasn't as creamy), it was good and def refreshing. Would return to try the milo volcano, mango bingsu, and 7 sons~ Remember to bring cash when you visit!
Update:
Craved that delicious matcha red bean bingsu we got during our previous visit at Sweetory, so returned for it again last night. When the patbingsu came out though, my friend and I both immediately thought the same thing - this is significantly smaller than the previous bingsu we ordered. It wasn't just the size that was different - there was def less matcha powder and ingredients used (last time our bingsu was covered in green, but this time there was a lot of ice). The red bean had larger chunks in it (most likely due to a diff can brand) and at the bottom of the shaved ice, there were pieces of red and white jelly. Interesting how there's diff variations of the same dessert; we just weren't expecting it to not be as delicious as the previous time we had it. It was a different woman crafting the dessert, but I wish it would be more consistent (looking through the Yelp pictures, there seems to be a few variations of this bingsu, depending on the day you visit). Honestly we left feeling a tiny bit disappointed during this experience bc we had visited Sweetory craving that same bingsu we just had...
Read morei honestly rarely ever give one star reviews but i am extremely disappointed by my experience here. me and my friends, a group of 4 people decided to stop by this cafe after we had dinner to see if they had any vegan desserts for our one friend that has a milk allergy. we were waiting on line to see the menu that a couple was already looking at. while we were waiting for our one friend to look at the menu, our other friend went to use the bathroom. when my friend looked at the menu he thought he saw something that wasnât milk based and asked the lady behind the register if it was milk free. she said everything on the menu had milk in it so my friend said oh okay thank you and we started walking out.
she then came up to us and asked if we only came to the cafe to use the bathroom and we said no but my friend with the allergy immediately felt bad and told her he would buy something. he went to the register with her and asked for a bottle of water. she then pulled out the menu and pointed to the teas and said those didnât have milk in it and he said he would buy one. she said âwhy would you come to a bubble tea place if you canât have milkâ. then she said âwhat about the rest of your friends theyâre not gonna buy anything? you guys only came for my bathroomâ. at this point we were all really confused and upset because he was going to buy something even though she initially said everything had milk in it. at that point we said good night and left and she kept saying âyou guys only came for the bathroom! you guys only came for my bathroom!â over and over again as we left.
i understand that it may have been easier for everyone if my friend called before we went to the cafe and asked about the ingredients in their dessert, but i still donât think that excuses the way that this woman, who I think is the manager, was speaking to us. Iâve honestly never experienced this before and Iâm shocked. i hope that the staff at this cafe can practice being...
Read moreThey say Jackson Heights is the Mecca of cuisine diversity and they are right. Walking down steps from a Japanese restaurant on 73rd street lies a little sweet spot that sells shaved ice, bubble tea and dessert toast. We had come here after having a delicious meal at Izakaya Fuku, the restaurant located above this place. We ordered the Matcha Red Bean Bingsoo and the Mango Bingsoo (our total costing about $20). Personally, found the Mango Bingsoo a bit too sweet for my liking as the syrup overpowered the shaved ice and the actual mangoes.
I really enjoyed the Matcha Red Bean Bingsoo which came with a side of matcha syrup that you pour on to the shaved ice. The shaved was neither overly bitter nor overly sweet. My only complaint was that they put a little too much red bean (nearly half of the shaved ice was red bean, compared to the picture on the menu).
Iâd say this place is decent for a simple shaved ice craving for those not wanting to go far from Elmhurst/ Roosevelt area.
