Always anxious to enjoy my favorite NYC food staples when making it back to Gotham, and as such I surprised myself after nearly two weeks realizing that I hadn’t had a good bagel, which I usually enjoy with lox or whitefish salad. When I had the realization I somehow also reflected on how long it had been since a had a proper knish. *Light bulb moment!* What if I had a lox knish sandwich? I was sure that this sandwich had to already be a “thing” but found little evidence of this idea on the internet besides a recipe for a more hors d'oeuvre version of bite-sized mini knish topped with smoked salmon. So at 5:30am this morning I headed over to nearby and highly revered Tal Bagels and deli counterman Sobuj, who admitted never making one before himself, expertly put together fresh, hand-sliced smoked salmon on a warm potato knish, adding cream cheese, mustard, and red onion. Though a potato knish may not have as near the structural integrity as a bagel (and rightfully so) it still made for a very manageable—and very delicious—handful of a meal. The smooth, silky salmon aromatized with pleasant smokiness, with its streaks of tasty fat rendered easily from the warm of my grateful tongue. piquant mustard and crisp red onion rings helped balance the fish’s rich oiliness, and the cream cheese and soft potato of the knish were amply supportive in both texture and subtler flavors. Sobuj exclaimed he couldn’t wait to try one himself, and I assured him he might enjoy very much, and as I plan to revisit Tal Bagels during my present stay, often for this same sandwich, I look forward to hearing his thoughts on this fulling and totally satisfying sandwich.

I've gone here my entire life. You can see that I reviewed positively with 5 stars under the same name about five years ago. This place has fallen apart, even as they've renovated and cleaned up. And the reason is for the service. The bagels taste just as good as they always have. But the place has had it's good vibe destroyed by the extremely rude behavior of it's employees, but especially by one man who I believe even his own coworkers dislike. And he is the taller guy who works the register. He is always humiliating and disparaging his co-workers, talking back and behaving rudely towards customers, and creates problems and confusion with everyone. Then on the other hand they will mess up your order because their system for taking orders is highly flawed and then try to make you feel bad for asking them to make what you asked for. Three stars because the bagels and coffee are good, the place is clean with a bathroom.

If I could leave 0 stars I would! Came in to buy breakfast, ordered two everything bagels with scallion cream cheese, tomato, lox and onion. Add a toasted croissant with butter, a single cookie and a cup of fruit? $44 total. Get back home, the bagel has jalapeno cream cheese. I call to tell them and they yell at me that I am wrong, it is 100% not jalapeno cream cheese and ask me to take a bite. I do! IT IS JALAPENO (see picture)! They then say to bring it in and they will check. If it is, new bagels, if not you get nothing. Literally their words. How utterly disgusted I am with this place for such horrible response to what was clearly an honest mistake on their part and two wasted bagels because nobody here eats spicy cream cheese.

I use to get my bagel from this establishment every morning until today. I walked in and waited on line to place my order. I watched a gentleman cut me in line but I did not say anything because I understand that the workers do not see everything going on. The cashier asked if I placed my order and I said no so she let a tall gentleman with glasses and a hat on know. The gentleman then looked at me and immediately turned to the lady behind me in line and said 'Yes, what can I get you?" I still waited to place my order. The tall gentleman continued to take the order of the 3 people behind me in line. The cashier informed the tall gentleman with glasses a second time that I did not place my order and his response was to tell the cashier, in an extremely nasty attitude, that he said next and that I ignored him. I understand everyone has a bad day but do not take your bad day out on me. I will no longer be going to this establishment for my morning bagel. Completely unnecessary attitude and disrespect this worker showed me. I feel bad for the other...
