We're preparing for a long visit to Mexico, and we'll do lots of regional eating. As a regular New Yorker, all I knew is tacos and burritos, so we checked out Molcajete to try mole and a tamal. Both were excellent. (We want to get an idea of what to expect.)
I only gave four stars because I mostly restrict my carb intake, and still knew I'd be in for corn and rice. Alas, the mole was pretty sweet, though the owner described it as spicy. Well, Thai food is spicy in my book. Mexican food seems so far to me to be only what we call "seasoned." I'll know more after my trip. Taqueria Molcajete is such an underrated spot! It’s technically a deli, but they’ve created a cozy seating area for dining in. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. We came on Valentine’s Day and they had an extremely beautiful backdrop.
We ordered the molcajete, which is meant for at least two people, but honestly, it was so loaded that we couldn’t even finish it! It comes packed with a variety of meats, shrimp, nopales, cheese, and more—absolutely delicious. It’s also served with rice, beans, and a generous portion of tortillas.
To top it off, we had micheladas served in beautiful terra cotta drinkware with Modelo beer—such a nice touch!
The pictures don’t do it justice; you have to come and try it for yourself. Definitely another hidden gem...
