I had been to this bar a year ago. The vibes were great. They play all sorts of music, it has a young crowd (college students), drinks are like any other dive bar, service is decent.
However, I went this past Saturday to have a few drinks at the bar. Only had one drink with my friend at the bar. After closing out my tab I decide to use the restroom and head out. Once I am coming up the stairs I bump into a security guard (a big white male, Puerto Rican most likely) and he stopped me. The security guard said, this section is for a private party, text your friend to come over here. I said "no, I am good I am just heading out". I tried to move and he stops me and starts calling security.
At this point I am confuse what is going on. The place is loud and dark. All I can see is the security guard finishing his food. When all of the the sudden he grabs me very hard from my arm, drags me and throws me out the bar. Everything happen so fast that my friend barley realized I was being thrown out the bar.
Honestly, I don't even know if this was a racist move, harrasment, or just plain power struck from security.
This has been my first experience in NYC being treated in such a way for no reason. I am 100% sure there excuse would be to say it is a drunk female acting up. But trust me it was not the case and that is what is alarming about this situation. I want to bring awareness to what happen to me because I am not sure what were the intentions of the security guard.
**Do not go to this bar alone and if you do, do not go to the...
ย ย ย Read moreBouncer was not very well informed about foreign forms of ID. I presented him my US issued ID to which he questioned the validity of it. Thatโs okay, I understand not everyone is familiar with this kind of identification. But when my husband stepped in and asked if we could have a bartender look at it, especially since weโve been coming to Gin Mill for years and some of the staff recognize us when we come in. This for some reason made the bouncer become instantly hostile. He got in my husbands face and began yelling at him and behaving irrationally. โDo you think I donโt know how to do my job!? You think you know people here!? Whatโs that guys name huh!?โ
I'm not writing this because I want an apology from the bar, honestly. But because that entire interaction made me feel extremely unsafe and unwelcome at a place I thought I was considered a regular at. My husband profusely apologized to this bouncer yet he still behaved as if he was going to get violent with him. I'm angry, and I'm not coming back.
This is a warning to everyone but specially for my foreign fellows you might not be greeted with respect.
To Gin Mill, I hope you invest more in educating your staff on how to greet and deal with those circumstances. I'm really sad to see a place I liked so much doing so bad. Do better. I'm done. I don't wish being humiliated like...

As if the deals aren't enough, the customers and staff are friendly, and the service is fast. This is THE place to be to watch sports. They have dozens of tvs. Plus, during football and big events secret screens come down behind the bar for even more projected sports goodness. This is a Jets bar; however, there is often a Bills section in the back where they even have the sound on for the Bills.
Inside is huge. They have a small outdoor seating area curbside (holds about 15). They have a larger outside seating area with low tops and high tops in a street shed, just look both ways for bikes.
What to know if you have Kids or Wheelchairs: It's not great for kids. Kids are only allowed in the back, or outside. You need to navigate a few stairs to reach the back of the restaurant and lot of stairs for the bathroom. This is not a wheelchair friendly location. The bar area only has high-tops, and the back area is only reachable through stairs. But the outside area is very nice and wheelchair accessible. I assume they have a deal with a nearby bar or restaurant if someone needs an...
