Slow service, good food Service: Stopped in for a nice dinner on a Tuesday evening. It wasn’t too busy but the wait service is slow. The host sits you quick, the assistant brings you water and cleans the tables quickly, after your order is taken the food comes out quick (brought by the assistants) but the waiters are slow to get your order. Food: Soft shell crab app, 4 pieces of sushi, and 1 6 piece roll. $50 If you’re going to spend more on better sushi, I feel that its better to go a la carte. I got a scallop, sweet shrimp, king crab, and eel piece. My favorite was the eel which was shocking as it was the least expensive. It was slightly warm which made it almost like a mini unagi don. Sweet sauce and tender meat. I will definitely be coming back for that. Second favorite was the scallop which was a nice thicker piece and tasted perfectly buttery. The sweet shrimp was great and a nice treat once in a while. I wouldn’t recommend the crab, it might not have thawed enough or something, but it didn’t mold to the rice and just fell off when being picked up or trying to eat it. It is real crab though, and tasted fine. Like those crab claws that you would find at a buffet. Soft shell crab was good and came over a bed of lettuce with a ponzu dressing. So you get a salad with it, which is a nice touch. It was pretty but I’ve had better elsewhere. I’d just skip the rolls all together unless you can’t handle the actual taste of raw fish. It tastes the same as any generic Japanese sushi place for about 30% less. The seaweed was also slightly soggy so that it didn’t crunch or break easily when eating. TLDR: Waive down the waiter as soon as you’re ready to order or you’ll be sitting there all night. Skip the roll and get the actual sushi pieces/sashimi. It’s a great place that I’ll be back to when I’m not cranky from a long day of work and want my food fast.

Nov 2024 I’m back for the holidays and feel so at home here. Lychee martini, seaweed salad, shrimp Shumai and off the menu sushi rolls. BIG MOUTH & PANDA rolls. I’ll be back !!!🍸🍸🍸❤️ 2023- Keith is amazing - kickas$ happy hour and amazing service. Love sitting at the bar where you’re guaranteed to have fun conversations!! 2022- Still 5 stars!! Great service- fresh food and happy hour !! 2021- update This is my go to when in Astoria for sushi! Fresh, tasty food and strong cocktails makes watawa a favorite! Happy hour ends at 7pm and is such a social moment, nice running into old friends and neighbors here. Staff is always accommodating and genuinely awesome. Bartender KEITH is ahhhhmazing. Friendly, fast, makes eyes contact and manages to tend the bar and serve the high tops nearby. He makes a delicious lychee 🍸 martini. His partner is also fabulous. We had lots of sushi! Rock shrimp app. Edamame! Will be back soon! My fave sushi spot in Astoria. While many businesses have come and gone, Watawa is still going strong. Great bartender full of suggestions. Chill vibe, happy hour and really good food. What more do you need? Been coming here for years, now that I’ve moved, I’ll still take time to come here when in NYC. 💕lychee martini

Watawa Sushi used to be my favorite sushi restaurant on Ditmars Blvd. I’ve dined there many times - alone, with friends and family. The food and service were great, and I always left satisfied… until my most recent visit. I went back one evening with my mom, expecting the same amazing experience. We politely asked to sit by the window since there weren’t many people inside. Although they agreed, it felt like our request wasn’t well received. We waited a long time for our food, while people who arrived after us were served first. When our food finally came, it was nothing like before. The shrimp tempura sushi and fried calamari, which used be my favorites - tasted bad... like the oil hadn’t been changed for a while... Unfortunately, both the food and the experience were disappointing. Even worse, I had stomach issues later that night, and my mom didn’t feel well for almost a week. It was really upsetting, especially since this place used to be a favorite. Maybe I’ll give it another try someday - but definitely not anytime soon.

They have pretty good sushi and a decent lunch special.

The only thing I don't like is that I feel like they're a bit sneaky with the lunch special prices. The lunch special ends at 4. We got there just after 3. We were seated immediately and ordered within a few minutes. They were busy so our order took a little while to come out, which wasn't a problem at all. The issue I had is that we decided to order a bit more food. By that time it was like 4:05 or something like that. Instead of charging us the lunch special prices they charged us the regular price.

We didn't complain about it because the price difference was only a few bucks, but had we ordered more food and the price difference had been higher we would have said something. My issue with this is two things. One: in every restaurant I've been to that has a lunch special, as long as you are seated by the lunch special time you get the lunch special prices whether you're there for twenty minutes or an hour. Two: our initial order took a long time to come because they were busy. They even apologized for the delay. So if our order had come literally five minutes earlier we would have made the cutoff for our add-ons.

Again, we didn't complain so I don't know for sure if this is the restaurant policy or just miscommunication with the person who rang us up, but they need to fix this.

Other than that it's a solid sushi place. Decent quality, good portions, and very friendly staff. We've never had to wait to be seated, even...

Came here for dinner with a group of 3. We did not have any issues getting a seat. Plenty of open seats.

For appetizer, we ordered the rock shrimp with walnuts. The dish was good but the shrimp were slightly overcooked. There was nothing really special about the dish when compared to the traditional chinese dish with shrimp, walnut, and mayo. It tasted exactly the same. Nothing about the dish was elevated, however, in their defense, nobody said it had to be. I just assumed that it would be slightly different given the chic nature of this place. The walnut was lovely toasted and could smell the aroma of it.

For main dish, we got 2 sushi/sashimi combo platters and the spider and dragon roll. In terms of the sushi, the fish wasn't as fresh as it could have been. There was still enough water content in the fish that could be tasted. As a result, it made the fish seem mushy and less fish taste. The rolls were okay, nothing spectacular but the price point helps. The ratio of the avocado to meat was disproportioned. Felt like eating an avocado as opposed to sushi.

Ambience of this place is amazing. Extremely comfortable and excellent ventilation and AC. The leather seats/couches were very comfortable.

The service was excellent. They were very attentive to our water levels and never let it go below half. Every time a staff member passed our table, they always looked at our table to see if we needed anything else. Overall, a great trendy place, just...
