We've been huge fans of the Newbergundian for years. From luncheon dates to late afternoon refreshment, to glorious dinners, we've enjoyed it all. Today, however, was the first time we've gone for brunch. We were decidedly wrong when we'd thought this charming bistro couldn't get any better. Brunch was outstanding! Their hash offerings change, and today's was thick, smokey bacon hash with arugula, roasted potatoes, and an exquisite green sauce with just a hint of tarragon. The eggs were lightly poached, and the sourdough toast was well buttered and crisp. My husband's Benedict rested on a perfectly toasted English muffin, which so many restaurants neglect to do these days. The hollandaise couldn't have been any fresher, and it's consistency was not too gloppy or too thin . . . it was perfect. My husband's side of fruit was fresh and beautifully presented. The plates, in general, were works of culinary art, fragrant and pleasing to both the palate and the eyes. Beverage choices included alcoholic brunch standards, as well as non-alcoholic adult beverages that were creative, simple, and so refreshing. Even the coffee was outstanding. We have, yet another reason to love the Newbergundian!

Where to start… ok, let me begin by giving a major shoutout to our server, Eileen! She was attentive and made our dining experience extra wonderful! The ambience at Newbergundian is so cozy and inviting! We sat in their warm tent surrounded by cute string lights. Now, onto the main attraction - the food! From start to finish, everything was absolutely delicious! We started with fresh oysters and their soup of the day which was a yummy seasonal squash. Their special of the day was a sole with lentils and a smoky, sweet topping (I actually don’t know what it was, but it was soo good!). The halibut fish and chips were great, the slaw was perfect and not drowning in mayo, and the tarter sauce tasted homemade with just the right amount of horseradish. We also ordered a burger, which actually was over cooked BUT to be fair, the restaurant was slammed and Eileen noticed and totally corrected it… she even surprised us with a comped dessert. And OMG, let me just say that maple cheesecake was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time! Highly, highly recommend Newbergundian and I can’t wait to return and try more of their specials!

Update: We had a Broadway show to attend and I'd had a great experience before at this restaurant so before driving into Portland we went here for dinner as part of our nite out. If you follow me I rate based on food and service experience. That's why we eat out right ? Honestly the food was still really great. The service was bad, like really bad (I don't think I'll return bad). We ordered and every single entree came out at the same time. So by the time we got to our main meal it was cold. I also ordered a glass of wine and it was a very small pour for $14 dollars....I was so surprised, I asked the server if this was a normal pour or a sample to see if I wanted a glass? (Save your money don't order wine here). The waitress changed everything I felt able this place. Old Review: We really enjoyed this bistro. We were greeted when we walked in. The ambiance and service were great. Enjoyed the food as well. Would recommend checking it out if in town.

Edit: Made the BIG mistake of dining here again recently. We ordered multiple courses, and our waitress delivered everything all at once! Our entrees were stone cold by the time we got to them. What’s worse than poor quality food? COLD, poor quality food! Avoid at all costs.

Original review: We’ve been loyal dinner customers at The Newbergundian for 3+ years. The service was always spectacular, which more than made up for the often inconsistent and pricey food.

However, things took a sudden turn when they abruptly discontinued dinner and got rid of all their best staff. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried their daytime brunch 3 separate times. Each visit felt like we were on an episode of “Punked,” waiting for the big prank on us to be revealed.

To our dismay, the food arrived burnt and heavily over-salted, with the meats overcooked. The portions were minuscule, the ingredients were of low quality, and the prices were exorbitant. The service was painfully slow and impersonal on each visit, nothing like the great experiences we used to have here. It seemed like things were getting progressively worse each time we returned.

We’re at a total loss for what happened to this place!!! It’s clear from the recent reviews that we’re not alone in our disappointment. Don’t let this restaurant...

I went to Nerburgundian recently with a group of friends, and unfortunately, we had a very unpleasant experience that I think was due to my race. We would certainly never return!!!!

From the moment we were seated, it was clear that the service was not going to be good. Our waitress Noela seemed visibly frustrated when she greeted us, and as the meal went on, it became clear that her attitude was unprofessional and dismissive, especially when she interacted with us. We felt very uncomfortable, as her behavior seemed to be influenced by our race, which is something I never expected to experience when going out to eat.

Aside from the service, the food was incredibly disappointing. My dish was burnt, dry, and lacked flavor—nothing like what I was hoping for. The other dishes at the table were equally bland and poorly prepared, which made the whole meal feel like a waste of time and money.

It’s really unfortunate because we were excited to try this place, but between the poor service and subpar food, I won’t be returning. I really hope the management takes a closer look at both the quality of their food and the behavior of their staff, as no one should ever feel unwelcome or mistreated when they’re simply trying to...
