Review of Giuseppe’s Restaurant of Newburyport Or How Loretta accidentally almost killed me Beautiful weather today as Loretta Lomba Perez and I traveled to Maudslay State Park to pick out the location for my Folk Art weathervane to be installed for the showing in September of this year. I caught up with the crowd in the parking lot and we proceeded to walk around the park picking out spots that would be suitable for each of the artists. I noticed they looked like old retired geezers. Would they survive the walk? Pretty soon I wondered whether I would survive the walk. These were my peers and they kept up well with no complaints. One lady introduced herself, Sinika Nogello. She used walking poles that I’ve seen people use for cross country skiing. I knew her from the early days of Cape Ann tv. It was nice to see her. I met the rest of the crew. All nice folks. A pleasant day for all. After this event we decided to dine out. A big day for sure. My first sculpture show. So off to Guissepe’s Restaurant. Loretta said she picked out what she wanted to eat ahead of time by looking on the online menu. I should have seen this as a red flag. We ordered our meals and delighted in the food. As we were chomping away I noticed time started slowing down. Then an object came at me, all in slow motion. I watched as a squirt from a pickled hot pepper Loretta was cutting open came directly for my eye! I can still see it all now. Immediately burned like hell. I stumbled to the bathroom to flush it out. Someone was still in there. The wait seemed like ages. I finally got in and splashed tons of water in my eye. Finally I did enough. Came back to the table. Still burning. I know I just have to wait for it to subside. Eventually I could use it again. Loretta laughed and thought it was so much fun. She really thought I was faking it. I don’t do pranks. Well I had read the reviews ahead of time. Some really bad ones and some excellent. I was thinking in my review that I would give them hell. Thinking further I thought maybe it was all a plan by Loretta to kill me or mame me! Who to blame here? Talking with Loretta later and after giving her the Larry David truth stare, I deduced it just was a cruel accident. So actually Guissepe’s is a great restaurant and the food was excellent! Loretta just was just unlucky or maybe I was. Just not my...
Read moreWell I went there with my gf. I'm giving two stars for two reasons. One the wait staff doesn't know enough about the restaurant. If someone asks "hey what's this place known for?" I'd imagine you would have at least a few core items in the chamber to recommend. Well one of the things recommended sounded great not sure the exact name of the dish but it was a cream sauce pasta dish with mushroom asparagus and some other stuff. Food came out super fast( not a good sign) and the dish itself that the food was in was scorching hot , a clear sign of microwaving. I took a few bites auce was bland asparagus was rubbery and I was all set. I honestly did not want anything else or even the food taken off the bill I was disappointed after hearing great things . My gf got a delicious meal that was clearly fresh as the food was hot but the plate was merely warm . No microwave. Not super impressed by the food I got I just wanted to pay and leave. Didn't want to talk to a manager or anything. He came over anyway. I said I'm 100 percent positive that my dish was microwaved and I really don't want anything else. He insisted so I got the same dishy gf got to take home and ate it later and it was actually good. I believe stuffed cappelini is the name . I would go back and try the place again as the manager was super polite and the waitress was as well , she just didn't seem to know much about the food . And the atmosphere was a bit off as it's trying to be a deli an Italian restaurant and a food store all in one . To be honest the manager really saved this place and he's probably the only reason I'd try this...
Read moreStopped by on our way from Boston back to Maine. We were looking for a restaurant that was neither fast food nor a franchise. Inside the place was nicely decorated, which gave us high hopes that this would be a great find. The menu was vast and held more high hopes, as the offerings ranged from standard Italian fare to some really creative dishes. As I read it, I wondered how they could produce so many varied dishes(seriously, the menu was huge). I had my suspicions that they would have to take what I call "short cuts". Sadly, that was the case. We ordered the Lasagna and the mushroom ravioli. The Lasagna was a ridiculous 9 or 10 layers of Lasagna noodles(but only 2.5" or 3" tall) with only the tiniest amount of bechamel between and the 'meat' sauce poured over the top. Very disappointing. The ravioli was bland. You can choose what kind of sauce it comes with. I got the white sauce. It was a tasteless glop. The bread was cold and so was the butter. Another disappointment.
I have worked in food service for years, and my suggestion to Giuseppe's is : scale back on your menu. Focus on a few great "signature" dishes. If you want to do fancy stuff, make them "specials" and do them well. You're trying to do too much. You didn't fool me. I know your shortcuts and they're not worth it.
That's the risk you take when you try a little-known (to us) place- you find gems... and you find places that you won't return to. Sadly, Giuseppe's falls in the latter...
