Unfortunately, our first visit to Moonrise Cafe was also our last. My wife and I came with a friend visiting from out of town after hearing good things, but the experience was disappointing from the moment we walked in. The cafe is incredibly dark inside, with dim lighting and a decor style that felt both tacky and overwhelmingly themed with pro-cop/over the top patriotic signage. That might be fine for some, but it wasn’t for us.
Ordering was awkward. The barista who helped us seemed new and a bit unsure with the point-of-sale system, but she was very kind and doing her best. Sadly, an older woman—who we assumed was the owner—jumped in and openly scolded her in front of us after a minor mistake, muttering “no, damnit!” under her breath. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional. We felt bad for the barista, who didn’t deserve that treatment.
We ordered two bagels and three drinks. Initially, we asked to dine in, but within seconds of saying that, we changed our mind and asked for it to go. The barista kindly went to notify the kitchen, but we could clearly hear the same older woman rudely say, “They changed their mind about to go within seconds??” in a very nasty tone. It wasn’t even busy—only a few other people were there. It made us feel like an inconvenience for the simplest request.
The drinks took about 10 minutes, which was fine, but the quality was lacking. My black coffee tasted like watered-down diner coffee. The mixed espresso drinks were missing both flavor and milk—bland and poorly balanced. When we got home and opened our food, things only got worse. I had asked for an everything bagel with just avocado. What I got was an untoasted bagel with barely two slices of avocado and butter (which I didn’t ask for and can’t eat due to a dairy sensitivity).
All in all, we left feeling unwelcome and disappointed. We won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend...
Read moreI love Moonrise Cafe, I go there anytume I want a chill place to have a cup of coffee and work/hang out. The staff is typically pulled from the local high school, but they're generally really helpful and actually pretty funny. The other patrons include their hilarious friends, several social and support groups for women, and various locals from town.
One time we had an impromptu intervention and helped some high school kid get over his emotionally manipulative on and off again girlfriend. Two days ago, I (Sanders supporter) had a polite, intelligent conversation with an undecided voter and a Trump supporter about the mess that is our superdelegate and primary system.
It's always good for a random, fun day. The food is good, especially the paninis, althoigh they take a little while to make. As far as drinks go, the coffee is great. If yyou want a real caffeine fix, try the ultimate iced coffee. The london fog is a nice latte, its made with honey. Moon chai is also very good, they habe several great drinks. The boston creme latte almost gabe me diabetes, I think that was the point, thougj.
If you want refreshing, they have bubble tea and smoothies and, of course, froyo, which is all good. They have a massive layout of toppings, so...
If you have kids, take them here. If you have a date and you wanna appear a low-key, knowledgable about the area, and fun, take her or him here. If you are cool, come here. If you are actively trying to become cool, come here. If you need relationship...
Read moreHello my name is Matthew Coyle. I am a big fan of the beans provided at this establishment. I am what I would consider a coffee connoisseur and have been all around the country tasting and reviewing many fine coffee foundations. Moonrise Cafe has particularly caught my eye however and peaked my interest. In all of my years reviewing café, never have I encountered employees quite as spectacular as those at Moonrise Cafe, located at 2 Broadway, North Haven, CT. One individual in particular, Rachel Petry, just one of the finest beings I’ve ever spoken to. Rachel Petry has become a good friend of mine over my visits to this cafeteria and has even shared some life experiences with me. Just a wonderful, wonderful way to treat others in my opinion. Another individual, Lauren Clorite, has offered to make homemade ice cream with me, an offering that only occurs once in a lifetime, this I accepted. Lauren Clorite seems to be a good one if I had to say so myself, even discounting me $2.00 off of my coffee, what a bargain! Though I did shortly slip and fall afterward, spilling my $1.04 coffee on the icey ground beneath me. To conclude, I deeply hope every person within a 356 mile radius of Moonrise Cafe (North Haven, CT, 2 Broadway) sits down and enjoys a good beverage or two with the fine employees of this...
