My family went to J Peters tonight with a friend and her son. I have 2 children who are older than 12, but frequently order off the kids’ menu because of the serving size (as does my mother-in-law) and I cannot remember ever having a problem with that at any other restaurant. First, my daughter ordered the kids’ grilled cheese sandwich. Then, my son ordered the kids’ chicken tenders. The waitress said he could not do that because he is older than 12, but he COULD order the chicken tender entree. The difference in price was about $8, and while I thought it was crazy, I knew he could have leftover tenders and it came with a salad. The waitress said it no was ok for my daughter to have the grilled cheese because there was not an equivalent to it on the entrees or appetizers. We ordered and everyone’s food was good. I had the prime rib sandwich and even though the bottom piece of bread was soggy, it had good flavor. My friends got a sirloin and ribs and said their’s was good. We were ready to leave and got the bill. I told the waitress there seemed to be a mistake because we had been charged for the tenders, prime rib sandwich, and a club sandwich (almost $14) instead of the kids’ grilled cheese ($8). She responded that she had told us that we would be charged the price for the club because my daughter was older than 12. When I and my friend both said she had not told us that, the waitress became defensive. I calmly just asked to speak to the manager. She came out and explained that this was their policy—to upcharge the kids’ menu items. I told her we were not told that and she did apologize. She gave me a $5 gift card and a $1 bill which covered the difference, but I’m pretty sure this restaurant is one and done for us. Now, from a business perspective, it seems a lot more economical to charge the outrageous amount for the grilled cheese (which costs pennies) or couple of chicken tenders and handful of fries and let anyone order those. The entree chicken tenders had A LOT of chicken for twice the price when I’m guessing the kids’ portion had approximately a third of the chicken. Seems like...
Read moreBland Food: No Hospitality. went here for lunch on the Saturday before Mother's Day with my son and granddaughter. Hostess greeted us with " How Many?" Rarely a good sign. Empty restaurant and wanted to seat us right outside the bathroom door: I declined and with a visible huff the hostess seated us elsewhere. Drinks were 2 waters and a lemonade, we got 3 waters. I had the salad which said "mixed greens"; it was all iceberg lettuce, the toppings were bacon, egg, cheese and other ingredients which all had no flavor (how do you take the flavor out of cheese and bacon?} My son had she crab soup which he said had no seasoning, but he was happy with his Caeser salad, hence the one star. A lady came around and asked how everything was and I explained my disappointment, to which she said the lettuce situation was due to the vendors and to the rest she said, "so you won't be coming back?" I said "no" she said "ok" and walked off. I live and work local, and I am the person who walks through the restaurant ensuring guest satisfaction. I understand the importance of "word of mouth" This entire situation could have been turned around with a little pro-activeness. I also never, ever greet our guests with "How Many?" Your title is host(hostess) be one. If you're walking through any business asking guests how their experience is going be ready with a solution, A quip and walk off is neither. I am asked daily from visitors to our area about places to go and where to eat. Needless to say, I have already told several to steer clear of J. Peters; I...
Read moreWe've been diners at J Peters Grill & Bar for several years. The restaurant has a great wait staff and the atmosphere is very good. It has that local Pub feel, and meshes quite well into the local neighborhood, and the prevalent clientele of seniors. It's one of our goto restaurants in the region. However, in that past year or so, we haven't been going quite as often, mainly because someone in the chain of management keeps altering the menu or food.
First issue is the chicken tenders meal. They changed the prep to include marinating them in sweet tea. That change imparts a weird sugary flavor on the chicken. Many people these days, including us, are looking for less sugar in our diets not more, we don't drink sweetened tea. We stopped ordering that menu item because of the change.
Yesterday, I ordered the Flounder Sandwich, that has always been served on a long submarine type roll. However, the flounder came on what amounts to a small hamburger bun. I noted my dissatisfaction to our server, and the kitchen changed the roll to my satisfaction, but noted the type of roll had changed and in future I should expect the Flounder Sandwich to be served on the hamburger bun. That will now be the second menu item I will no longer order.
Whoever is in charge of the menu, if their goal is to drive off customers, they are accomplishing that goal. Please just stop altering the menu and prep. Stop the sugar bath for the chicken tenders, and keep the Flounder Sandwich on...
