Local Spotlight: Burrito Stop Mex & American Grill – Whiting, IN
As someone who genuinely enjoys supporting local spots, I had to swing by Burrito Stop after hearing a few YouTubers mention it. My partner and I pulled up ready to give it a shot.
First impressions were solid. The place is in a good location, with a clean, modern vibe and a beautifully diverse crowd. I’m talkin’ a real mix—Black, white, Hispanic, African, Indian—people from all walks of life, many likely working in the nearby mills and refineries. That kind of turnout had me thinking, “This place must be the real deal.”
It was busy too—steady flow of folks picking up orders. Our hopes were high.
I went with a steak and chicken burrito bowl, while my partner ordered the carne asada and a Jamaica drink. The food looked promising when it came out… but unfortunately, that’s where the excitement ended.
The flavor just wasn’t there. If you’re expecting authentic Mexican fare, this isn’t the place. It’s more of a Chipotle-style concept, but even that comparison falls short. The red and green sauces were nearly flavorless. I tried mixing them together to salvage something—still nothing.
The rice was bland and unseasoned. The meat was dry and underwhelming. Beans were just… beans. And the carne asada? Tough and missing that signature grilled flavor—no char, no soul.
We spent about $40 for the meal. Honestly, the best thing I can say is that we supported a local business. And sometimes, that’s all that matters.
Would I go back? Probably not. But I gave it...
Read moreMy first experience with Burrito Stop Mex and American Grill was in the form of a delivery order, and it won't be my last!
Delivery is handled in-house for a modest fee, & based on the availability of their driver, but I'll take any timing inconvenience over stuffing cash into the hands of an advertised delivery service that will likely be late, might deliver to the wrong house, or - worst of all - might dig through my purchase to sample MY dinner! The Burrito Stop driver was on time, & refreshingly polite.
For our test run, we had a taco dinner (on the requested flour tortillas), a three-meat bowl (with shrimp, steak & chicken crowning fresh greens & diced vegetables), and a side container of pico de gallo.
My thanks to Griselda for sweetly helping me navigate the menu without being condescending, and for the entire operation showing their pride with their outstandingly-FRESH ingredients & their excitingly-varied menu! See...
Read moreService was fast, food was fresh and cooked to order which is why I'll give it 2 stars. The restaurant itself was nice and clean. The meat was very tender. Yet everything except for the rice was flavorless. The "hot sauce" had a little flavor, luckily, but was not spicy at all. We had carnitas, steak and chorizo tacos. I dont think ever ever had such flavorless meat in my life. I'm really confused how the chorizo could be dripping with juice/sauce, yet have no flavor. By far the most bland beans I've had as well. If some time and effort went into marinating or seasoning the meat at all, I'd gladly give it a higher rating...but at this point I think taco bell has more flavor. Definitely would not...
