Been going to the GV for what seems like 30 years, from their humble beginnings further south on Livingston street to the new beautiful location near Shoprite. Food is always terrific, most always busy too but worth the wait if dining in. I usually grab takeout, souvlaki or falafel, but if I want the Greek salad I will ways eat in for that because it has always been huge affair, with enough left over to take home as another full meal. Don't pass on the Greek Fries as I had done for like the first 25 years of going there, but whereever you are on your diet, make room for these hot railroad tie style logs of lemony love. Baklava also is fantastic as are the dips with grilled pita. Besides the traditional chickpea variety, there is a potato garlic type I am quite fond of as well. Always a superior experience, even more so in the new location. Cheers!
P.s. My make me feel good meal is a takeout order of gyro meat pita w/o lettuce (a marvelous pile of meat onions, tomatoes with tzatziki) chickpea dip with 2 extra pita, side of grape leaves, and baklava. More than a meal for sure since there will be leftover dip and grape leaves, but I am always ready for that later or the next day...lol.
Unfortunately, they are closed Sundays, which I do appreciate, but it always seems I have the crave on Sundays like today....
P.p.s. BTW, I have read some of the other not as great reviews, and as I can understand some of the comments on the service, I would say those reviews must have been for the older, smaller location, where it was at times not what you would expect. The place had o my about 12 tables mostly 2-tops. An elderly gentleman normally services them all when I would eat there during lunch/off hours and it was not bad, just comfortably slow. I never minded it because I did not have to rush back to work, etc. I believe there was more help with rush hours, but that was seldom when I would dine in. The new location is bigger and very well staffed by attentive servers and a much larger kitchen capacity and staff. I can't speak to ever having been served undercooked meat, certainly that was an very odd occurrence. I am sure the staff/manager/owner would have made right by you if brought to their attention.
Highly recommended...try the new location if you haven't been, it is a different experience. Tho I will always fondly remember the old house where a hungry couple could have a relaxing meal sneaking in right after lunch hours at about 2:30. One of my Proust madeleine type...
Read moreThe Greek Village has some of the best Greek food I've ever had, but after dining there a few times, my recommendation is to stick to take-out. The staff isn't the friendliest or happiest and that's just not the atmosphere I want when sitting down for lunch or dinner. Also, your order must be taken all at once - no ordering an appetizer or drinks while you decide on what your main course will be.
While I wasn't satisfied by the service, the food truly is great. The free pita that comes with your meal is so tasty it doesn't even need a dipping sauce - but I do find myself topping it with bits of my entree quite often. For an appetizer, I had the Greek sausage once, which was good, but a fairly small portion compared to my favorite - the fried eggplant (sure it's fried, but it's unbelievable) which is a huge serving.
When it's lunchtime, go for anything in a pita - the prices are great for the size of the meal and it's a great taste of Greek. I prefer the falafel, but don't hesitate to try out gyro or lamb! For dinner, I'm pretty much set with the mousaka - think shepherd pie but Greek. The best part is there's usually enough mousaka for a snack/meal...
Read moreI’ve been a fan since their first restaurant in Norwood. I knew they’d outgrow that location. The owners are so kind and remember everything about you. I truly wish I lived in Northvale because I’d eat in or now order out every single night. The Spanakopita is so incredibly delicious! Perfect seasoning, top quality Feta, the Phyllo dough is crispy and never greasy. Moussaka is fabulous. We’ve tried just about everything on the menu and yes, I’d eat here every night. Something as simple as grilled chicken is perfection! Top quality chicken my uncle was a butcher. (I just can’t eat gamey tasting poultry. I always order a few sides of grilled chicken and dip it in the best tasting, perfect consistency Tzatziki sauce. Great healthy snack the next day! My husband loves the grilled octopus and keftedes. They are scrumptious little meatballs as an appetizer so best to order two! My life wouldn’t be complete with a Gyros platter with a side of rice or grilled vegetables. Hands down best Gyros in NY or NJ. Save room for the Baklava. Or have it the next day! So clean and just...
