I'm a dad and I'm also vegetarian, so sometimes it can be hard to find a place that the kids like to eat that also has some meatless options. My wife and kids started going here earlier this year, and since then we've started eating here regularly. I've been happy to find that they have a veggie burger (the salad boy) that can be a little sloppy but tastes great. My wife and kids can also find plenty of things to eat here, whether it's a burger, a chicken sandwich, or a grilled cheese. Where this place really shines is in the variety of (1) side dish options and (2) milkshakes.
Regarding the side dishes, they have all kinds of fun fried things like mushrooms, zucchini, onion rings, jalapeno poppers, and even shrimp. Unlike a lot of restaurants, the quality of these options is good. Everything comes out nice and crispy. Regarding the milkshakes, they have an insane number of flavor options, ranging from hot fudge / peanut butter / mocha kinds of things to fruit flavors like orange and cherry. They also have a root beer flavor that's kind of like a root beer float; there is usually a seasonal option as well. My personal recommendation is the peanut butter. It's a nice, thick, shake with tons of flavor.
In terms of atmosphere, it's a fun kind of retro drive-in experience where you just park your car and someone runs out to get your order. After they bring your food, you can either sit and eat in the car or drive it home. It's been nice during the pandemic to have an option that doesn't require getting out of your car. Of course, if you're antisocial like me this is a good option even when there...
Read moreHeard about this place for a long time. Best burger in the state, I heard. Finally made my way there. Be warned. Didn't see a drive thru. FYI, stay in your car! Got out of my car to order at the window. Some young man by another car tells me to go back to my car. They come to you and place the order with them. Ordered their famous Swenson Burger, tater tots with ranch and a small blueberry shake. Told me it would take 8-10 minutes. Which it did. Drive home was only 10 minutes and food was still hot. Shake was nice and thick, blueberry taste was pretty fresh, not synthetic tasting. Tots and ranch were pretty basic. The hamburger was interesting. The bbq sauce on it was sweet and tangy. A nice combo with the melted cheese and tartar sauce of all things. Although the two combos of sauces complement one another nicely. I normally like veggies on my burger. I don't think this one comes with them, unless you ask. But I can see why they come without. The stars of the sandwich are the sauces. Overall, a fun place to visit with the kids on a summer night out or if you're looking to try "the best...
Read moreWe ordered from the Hilliard Swenson's today and we were very disappointed. The best part of our meal was the milkshakes. They were very enjoyable. But the burgers were not very good. We ordered two doubles and they were plain and oddly sweet. The bun was sweet, but so was the meat. Like candy sweet. It was odd and unappealing. The fries were also bland and needed more seasoning. The onion rings were mostly breading. We also had the mac and cheese bites and those were good also. Overall, we wouldn't go again for food. If we have a hankering for milkshakes, sure we'd go back but only for the milkshakes. This was one of those meals where it wasn't worth the calories or the price. This was our second time trying Swenson's and we don't remember the first being this bad. It was a different location, but we weren't very impressed by that experience either. Again, we loved the milkshakes. Our oddly sweet tasting burgers maybe just from this one location; and consistently at other locations may vary. Yet, we're not sure what all the hype is about this place; in our opinion it's...
