let me say I have a biased review because every time I've been to any portillo's in Wisconsin or illinois, the order is always wrong. I mean 12 times out of 12 at least. this location was no different. it kind of amazed me how it wasn't full but we were there maybe 9:30 p.m.? the place is usually packed and so loud you can't even hear yourself think. it was rather quiet that night (Thursday or Friday, I forget) and I thought I was going to have a nice experience. after we ordered our food we looked for a place to sit down. there were only patrons at three tables in the entire restaurant and every other booth table or chair was visibly unclean. there was ketchup smeared on multiple tables almost like somebody did it on purpose. it was dried so it had been there a while. food delivery drivers were coming in taking bags of food and then coming back and returning them because they were the wrong ones or something I don't know I didn't ask. we still had to wait between 15 and 20 minutes just for two burgers two Cokes and a large fry. I asked for grilled onions and they put regular onions on it. A new record, 13 consecutive visits where the order is always wrong. I'm uploading some pictures of just how filthy the place was and how the garbage was overflowing. there must have been at least a dozen people behind the counter, they all seem to be doing something but getting in each other's way. there was one old guy who looked too old to be even holding a broom sweeping up some other area. that poor guy, the younger kids should have helped him out rather than standing around making fries, and let him do that instead

I've no desire to step into the debate about NY v. Chicago hot dogs, but there's no point in being in Chicago without trying a Chicago style hot dog. We settled on Portillo's. I am sure natives will have hot takes on the choice, but I was interested not only in the hot dog itself but in this ubiquitous chain. I can say this about Portillo's - their food, for what it is, is not at all bad, but I've been now three times, and every time some small thing is wrong. It's either no napkins or a lacking ingredient or dressing/sauce packet. As it stands, there is nothing wrong with Chicago-style hot dogs at all, but tbh my preference remains Nathans or Hebrew National NY style with brown mustard, sauerkraut, relish and onions (red, if available). That being said, I do have to hand it to their Italian beef and sausage combo. That thing slays. My wife liked their chicken Caesar salad a lot, but was meh on the chicken sandwich. Typical fast food fare for the most past, but Oh man that Italian beef and sausage! I'll be thinking about that one back home.

The food and atmosphere were excellent! I'm the type of person that is used to a chili cheese dog, no onion; however, when in Chicago, you must have a fully loaded Chicago-style hot dog. I tried the Portillo hot dog, and it was by far the best hot dog that I've ever had! I'm not a mustard and onion fan, but it went well with the combination of toppings. The sport pepper gave it a nice little spicy kick. Had a side of their fries which can do with less salt for my taste, but they were excellent, hot, fresh, golden, and potatoey (not hollow), crinkle cut. I ordered for 7 people, and would recommend labeling the dogs since everyone had something a little different. Also, I have kids that don't like onions, the chili cheese dogs come with onions (didn't realize that), so they were picking it out. It would be a 5 star for me otherwise.
