They are currently under construction. I am not sure why a library that is almost "new" would undergo construction. Didn't the Architect get it right the first time around? Bring your own laptop as the computers here are always busy with senior citizens. Good Luck trying to get on a computer that is not hogged up for hours on end! There is a Quiet Room with a real fireplace. However, the Quiet Room is sometimes NOT so quiet as senior citizens believe it is a gathering place for socializing. I had to alert a library employee to tell the seniors to "be quiet." There are several individual study rooms (segregated from the rest of the library). You must reserve a Study Room in advance. There is a children's library within this large library -- tons of computers and books for the little crumb snatchers. The children's area is located to the left as you enter through the main doors. It is segregated from the rest of the library. The children even have their own washroom within this area. NOTE: The Children's section is specifically for KIDS ONLY which is nice. It is a safe area for the kids while keeping the rest of the library quiet. The employees are helpful, polite, courteous and professional. There is a small coffee shop as you enter the library (on right side). They also sell baked goods. The coffee is fairly good, but the baked goods, not so great. However, there is a Panera Bread and many other restaurants (Harlem & Cullom) nearby. You can take a lunch break and hit up so many places (from Mariano's, Buona Beef, Nami Sushi ($4 sushi - Lunch, except Monday). Pot Belly and Noodles on Harlem (a little south of Cullom Ave) is another option. Chipotle is a few doors away from Panera Bread. There are drop off boxes for videos and books. If you enter off of Wilson Ave. there is a long driveway where you can drop off books or videos right from your car window. If you live in Chicago, but come here, you can still check out books and/or reserve a book. However, if you reserve a book their first priority is to Harwood Heights residents. I have reserved many books here over the years, and have never had a long waiting period. There is ample free parking. They have FREE film festivals during the Summer months. This year they had Agatha Christie mystery movies from August through September 2016. BEWARE: Watch out for the Harwood Heights Cops. They are always desperate for revenue in Harwood Heights. We like to call them the Barney Fife and Andy of Harwood Heights, because they will write up a ticket for any...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis, the newer incarnation of the Eisenhower Public Library, has excellent wifi, storyhours, many classes and expanded study areas, all being used. Need the internet? Banks of PCS, but I'd suggst bringing a laptop, finding a plug and setting yourself up.
The FANNIE'S coffee shop serves fresh soup, sandwiches, baked goods (some baked right there!) and room to hang back.
The "quiet room" is the fireplace room. If it's on, the fireplace might lull you nicely. 250+ magazines and papers!
For locals, there are "first served" DVDs and the latest books; all others, and lots of blu-rays and games, are inside and plentiful.
Comic books on a comic stand! And enough graphic novels (just call 'em fancy comics already) for young to adult readers.
"Friends of the Library" hosts regualr book sales. Those include books rotated out of the system, donations and it is possible to score some ridiculous finds. I've picked up used CDs and records here.
Childrens World has two murals. The dragon was by Tom Gianni whose book paintings and tv court sketches are great.
THey use Boopsie, Lynda and a few services that I use through my laptop at home.
Printers available; get the card and go to work. Decent parking.
Be careful crossing Lawrence at Oketo; it's a bottleneck and pedestrians need to use extra caution.
Local eateries include Fannie's in-house, a good thai place and Suparossa on Lawrence (best carry-out for pizza). Twins Gyros is a bit of a walk or short ride north; they have been serving GREAT gyros for yeras and still do. In summer, they have open space outside, so ride your bike. Buona Beef is right up the street; Portillo's is nearby. There's a good thai place on Lawrence, too. But Fannie's can make a good gnosh while...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt is a nice looking liabrary, and very clean. I was very interested in getting a liabrary card from the public liabrary, since it is only 2 blocks from me. I had recently moved and have not had the chance to change my address on my driver's license. I went to the liabrary one time and attempted to get a liabrary card. Aparantly I needed a piece of mail showing my address. I understood the circumstances, since I had not changed my driver's license. I said okay thank you, I will bring one with me on my next visit. The next visit I had braught a piece of mail from my bank that was unopened, since I grabbed it on the go. Mrs. Peggy Tomsik asked me to open the piece of mail, then noticed though it was from the bank and had the legal postage mail stamp, it was not a bank statement. Reviewing my personal mail was not good enough, and it was frustrating because I had walked from home to the liabrary this time. It was apparently harder to get a liabrary card than anything. They had opened my personal mail, and though my name and address was in it, it was not good enough. Not to mention it had the legal postage stamp from U.S....
