Wasn’t sure what to expect upon recommendations from others, but this place is very special. Largest/thickest sushi rolls I have ever seen and couldn’t even finish half of one by myself !! Absolutely loaded with fish, no stinginess here. Was kind of difficult to find from the street, but the second floor of the shopping center has parking with access from the rear of the building. Prices were beyond reasonable given the portion sizes. Each roll varied from about $12-$16.
It is a very small shop with outdoor dining available, so takeaway is recommended for maximum comfort. The owner requires a face mask and asks for customers to social distance, so it’s really nice for immunocompromised people.
The menu has many options, offering both raw sushi (including nigiri) and cooked or deep fried rolls. The gyoza was incredible and very close to what you could get in Japan. Dare I say, it was better than konbini gyoza. Deep fried, but delicious just the same.
The shop closes promptly at 2pm, but the service was very fast even during the peak of lunch rush. Will definitely be visiting...
Read moreI decided to try this place out based off of my fellow Yelper's reviews.
There were so many choices posted on the wall so I just picked one. The roll that I got had shrimp tempura and unagi (eel) inside and was topped with ahi (tuna), imitation crab, spicy mayo sauce, unagi sauce, tobiko (fish eggs) and crunchies which I believe are corn flakes. It comes with a little bit of salad on the side. The price for the amount of sushi I got was actually very good.
The combination of all the flavors I think was too much. There were too many different things going on. I mean, it was good-- very good, but I think if I went with something more simpler I would have been happier.
The man working there was very friendly and helpful with suggesting some things to try. Outside of the store there are open tables to sit if you please.
I would definitely like to return to this place to try some of their other items. The price, amount, and quality...
Read moreThe first time I ate at Makoto, I was shocked to see how big the sushi was. Truly the most for your money on Oahu. Delicious fresh fish, sweet crab filling, and expertly made rice make these some of the tastiest rolls as well. The man here is very friendly and smart and has created some very interesting combinations that he calls Japanese fusion that you wouldn't expect from a place like this. I have returned many times now, always with an appetite, never to be disappointed. I've tried most of the rolls, and if you like spicy ahi tuna, you must get the Dragon tears roll; it's truly delicious and surprising. There is a similar roll that is also amazing called King of fire, because some like it hot. Everything that I've had is fantastic. The seating is limited and it's in a parking garage but somehow that adds to the experience. Whenever i have guests to the island, I always bring them to Makoto...
