Rib tip dinner: Originally I had 6 pieces of meat in the meal but I thankfully checked my bag as directed to on the signs. I inquired and the container was filled with what I should have gotten as a dinner. Rib tips: more than 1/2 was tough, some even so much not edible. Disappointing. The cornbread was dry, crumbly and seems like it was old. Old like days old. Cornbread is not difficult or something that would take long to cook so I’m not sure why I’d get old cornbread midday on a Saturday. If that’s not old then the cook needs to be retrained respectfully. It ended up in the trash. Sides: dressing was good and not overly salty. Yams had too much sugar for me. The staff continuously checked and refilled the sides which was good to see. I bought another meal for someone to eat and I hope it was better. Overall, not worth the $25+ tax I paid today. The staff was pleasant. The area was kept clean. However, the meat was a failure. I would be fine paying $25 if the meat was edible. I would not recommend going here for bbq as they have a not cash return policy. It is store credit or a gift card even if the food is poorly made. Likely need to go to a bbq specific restaurant next time. Someone else brought a meal back while I was there because the meat was tough. Not the same meat I was eating, but I should have took that as a sign to skip what I ordered. I have no plans on driving way back to the restaurant and just count it as a loss.

Sorry to say that this but I feel robbed. I used to get chitlins here for a reasonable price; it was worth not dealing with the hassle of cleaning at home and even though the prices gone up they were good + cleaned well. They used to have them right on the food line so you could see. But today what I ordered was absolute trash for $50. They have no size posted on the board so I asked and was shocked it for a 12oz cup! I said ok since I had a craving and they make you pay before getting the meal from the back… I’m a fool for paying but they should be ashamed to serve this mess. This is pic of the chitlins in the bag and then close up at home after I drained some grease out. I gave benefit of doubt thinking maybe what they cook in has reddish tint but honesty they are Dark, stringy textured and burnt parts. Of course there are no cash refunds and that’s why you PAY FIRST. Overall, the food quality there has gone down noticeably; I used to frequent there for their desserts, chitlins and dressing when I had a taste for it. I won’t ever consider returning.

I have been to mookeys both as a customer and as a Uber eats driver . Both experiences were terrible. I went there the first time hoping that I had found a good soul food spot nearby. The dressing was so overly salted, I had a disgusting taste in my mouth for days , even thinking about it would make me sick. I never ordered from there again. I came there 4/5/24 around 5:30 as a Uber eats driver maybe a year later from the salt incident. I go to where the have the sign for pick up orders. An elderly lady in a line nearby the sign told me ā€œyeah there’s a line ā€œ I said no I’m here for a pick up order , she said ā€œoh you’re here for a pick up order ?ā€ I said yea. She says ā€œsorry I didn’t know ā€œ under her breathe as if she really didn’t want to say it. She’s in some kind of mood so she’s still pissed and tells the guy working the register that ā€œ I’m here to order and he’s here to pick up ā€œ which I thought was obvious by where I was standing . The guy at the counter does a childish laugh and says to the lady ā€œwhat can I get you ā€œ as if to say F that guy I’m taking care of you. I understand the situation and I say ā€œ mybad I thought this is where the pick up orders got picked upā€ , the lady says ā€œ when you see a line you just don’t walk in front of peopleā€ which I would understand if they hadn’t instructed me with a sign to go to a specific area that only pertained to me or other drivers. Now I either have to argue with this old lady or just take the negative energy in and just accept how I was treated. I left and unassigned the order won’t ever pick up another one from this business. This is a low budget elderly soul food spot , if you’re under 55 this is not a place for you , it’s slow and the energy is old. Lillie bells is the way to go 100%. They are right around the corner and up to date and the food and...

Review for Mookie’s Soul Food Restaurant

I’ve been a loyal customer of Mookie’s for many years, and my family and I have always enjoyed the food. We even drive about 45 minutes just to get a taste of that good old fashioned soul food that’s hard to find where we live.

However, I have to say that over time, I’ve noticed a real decline in the quality and flavor of the food and today’s visit was especially disappointing. We ordered a variety of dishes including macaroni and cheese, green beans, dressing, baked beans, pig feet, and cabbage. Unfortunately, everything just seemed off. The macaroni tasted like boxed macaroni, not the baked version we’ve always loved. The dressing had no flavor and tasted more like plain cornbread. The green beans were mushy, almost like they had been reheated multiple times, and the cabbage was bland with no seasoning.

I’m not sure if there’s a new cook, but if so, soul food may not be their calling. Mookie’s has always been about flavor, comfort, and consistency and that’s what keeps loyal customers coming back. I say this with respect and love for a restaurant that has been part of my family’s dining tradition for years: please bring back the quality and taste that made Mookie’s special. Otherwise, you may lose a lot of your faithful customers—myself included.

A long-time loyal (and...
