I have been to mookeys both as a customer and as a Uber eats driver . Both experiences were terrible. I went there the first time hoping that I had found a good soul food spot nearby. The dressing was so overly salted, I had a disgusting taste in my mouth for days , even thinking about it would make me sick. I never ordered from there again. I came there 4/5/24 around 5:30 as a Uber eats driver maybe a year later from the salt incident. I go to where the have the sign for pick up orders. An elderly lady in a line nearby the sign told me āyeah thereās a line ā I said no Iām here for a pick up order , she said āoh youāre here for a pick up order ?ā I said yea. She says āsorry I didnāt know ā under her breathe as if she really didnāt want to say it. Sheās in some kind of mood so sheās still pissed and tells the guy working the register that ā Iām here to order and heās here to pick up ā which I thought was obvious by where I was standing . The guy at the counter does a childish laugh and says to the lady āwhat can I get you ā as if to say F that guy Iām taking care of you. I understand the situation and I say ā mybad I thought this is where the pick up orders got picked upā , the lady says ā when you see a line you just donāt walk in front of peopleā which I would understand if they hadnāt instructed me with a sign to go to a specific area that only pertained to me or other drivers. Now I either have to argue with this old lady or just take the negative energy in and just accept how I was treated. I left and unassigned the order wonāt ever pick up another one from this business. This is a low budget elderly soul food spot , if youāre under 55 this is not a place for you , itās slow and the energy is old. Lillie bells is the way to go 100%. They are right around the corner and up to date and the food and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRib tip dinner: Originally I had 6 pieces of meat in the meal but I thankfully checked my bag as directed to on the signs. I inquired and the container was filled with what I should have gotten as a dinner.
Rib tips: more than 1/2 was tough, some even so much not edible. Disappointing. The cornbread was dry, crumbly and seems like it was old. Old like days old. Cornbread is not difficult or something that would take long to cook so Iām not sure why Iād get old cornbread midday on a Saturday. If thatās not old then the cook needs to be retrained respectfully. It ended up in the trash.
Sides: dressing was good and not overly salty. Yams had too much sugar for me. The staff continuously checked and refilled the sides which was good to see.
I bought another meal for someone to eat and I hope it was better. Overall, not worth the $25+ tax I paid today. The staff was pleasant. The area was kept clean. However, the meat was a failure. I would be fine paying $25 if the meat was edible. I would not recommend going here for bbq as they have a not cash return policy. It is store credit or a gift card even if the food is poorly made. Likely need to go to a bbq specific restaurant next time. Someone else brought a meal back while I was there because the meat was tough. Not the same meat I was eating, but I should have took that as a sign to skip what I ordered.
I have no plans on driving way back to the restaurant and just count...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreReview for Mookieās Soul Food Restaurant
Iāve been a loyal customer of Mookieās for many years, and my family and I have always enjoyed the food. We even drive about 45 minutes just to get a taste of that good old fashioned soul food thatās hard to find where we live.
However, I have to say that over time, Iāve noticed a real decline in the quality and flavor of the food and todayās visit was especially disappointing. We ordered a variety of dishes including macaroni and cheese, green beans, dressing, baked beans, pig feet, and cabbage. Unfortunately, everything just seemed off. The macaroni tasted like boxed macaroni, not the baked version weāve always loved. The dressing had no flavor and tasted more like plain cornbread. The green beans were mushy, almost like they had been reheated multiple times, and the cabbage was bland with no seasoning.
Iām not sure if thereās a new cook, but if so, soul food may not be their calling. Mookieās has always been about flavor, comfort, and consistency and thatās what keeps loyal customers coming back. I say this with respect and love for a restaurant that has been part of my familyās dining tradition for years: please bring back the quality and taste that made Mookieās special. Otherwise, you may lose a lot of your faithful customersāmyself included.
A long-time loyal (and...
