My overall grade for Stan's Donuts & Coffee is: B
I don't regularly eat donuts, and every more infrequently, do I drive 20 minutes one-way to go get donuts. One day while checking out an Italian deli known for it's meatballs (review coming up), we noticed that Stan's Donuts had a location in Oakbrook.
My wife is not feeling well, so I surprised her one morning by getting up and making the drive to Stan's to get her some donuts from Stan's.
I ended up ordering 5 donuts and 1 apple fritter - yes, too much for 2 people, but we like to sample bites of somethings and not necessarily finish them if it's our 1st experience trying a new place.
The long and the short of it is, that almost all of the donuts were just too sweet for us. They are super sweet. Not that I don't love extra frosting on my Cinnabun center pieces when I'm there, because Cinnabon's are themselves, not too sweet. But these donuts were too sweet for our tastes and they were covered with sweet frosting.
The chocolate one was the best and is actually the only one we finished. I like the apple fritter, but that too was very sweet. I much prefer a local baker apple fritter which only sells them on Fridays and Saturdays - another review for me to write.
Will I make the drive to get Stan's donuts again? Sure - but it'll be for some out-of-town guests or my kids who Stan's is a great market segment for the younger generation.
I will say that as I walked out of the store at 8:00 AM, there were lots of folks and kids coming into the store - so they are absolutely not hurting for business.
I am probably in the minority, but I will for example, drive to the Donut Vault next time, instead of popping in to Stan's.
Great service - great...
Read moreSo I enjoyed their breakfast options and their coffee, I just had one thing that sort of took me by surprise. They don’t give out traditional condiments other than ketchup and cream for your coffee, and it’s all dependent on who is taking your order through the drive through. I went a few times and had the loveliest girl 👧🏾 super sweet and very friendly. Adored her energy!! I asked for ketchup and honey, and she pulls out a box full of honey and grabs a few and then did the same for the ketchup and hands them to me. I got the next day and get a guy with glasses and a beard 🧔🏾 he’s nice when taking my order but after I left my tip, he takes the machine back and I ask for the same items I got the day before from the super sweet girl “can I have ketchup and 2 honeys?” And he’s clearly lies and says “oh ketchups in the bag and we don’t have honey here” so I said “no problem, do you guys have any jelly’s or jams for the breakfast sandwiches?” He says “no, we don’t offer those here either, just ketchup”
The following day I go and get the super sweet girl, and she again, hands me honey and ketchup. Just out of curiosity, I asked if they offered jelly’s or jams and she sweetly said “yes of course, we have grape, and strawberry, would you like for me to get you some?” I said, “ah no, I just wanted to know for future reference.
I would have given this place the full 5 stars but found it incredibly strange of that small detail. It kinda bugged me because, who lies about such trivial things. I just wish the sweet girls level of service could be duplicated across every drive through server. But nevertheless, if you get her, you can rest easy and know that you’ll be...
Read moreReview of Blueberry Fritter
My first time to Stan's Donuts was two days ago. I'm a big Apple Fritter guy, and Mariano's recently changed their 'really good' Apple Fritters for a new one that I don't like, so I have been on the 'hunt' for a good Apple Fritter at least as good as Mariano's old one. This led me to Stan's Donuts & Coffee, I arrived later in the day was looking to buy one Apple Fritter and one Blueberry Fritter, but they had no Apple Fritters and 2 Blueberry Fritters, so I purchased them. I like Blueberry better than Apple as a flavor, so I had the Blueberry Fritters for breakfast that last two mornings. Yesterday I ate the fritter at room temperature, and it was a very good fritter, everything a fritter should be, a tiny bit crunchy, covered in glaze, and the inside was great too, the blueberry flavor was there but not as much as the apple in Apple Fritters.. Today I put my room temperature Blueberry Fritter on a plate and put it in the microwave for 7 seconds (no paper towel, no plastic, just the fritter), and Wow! the difference was amazing, first only the middle of the fritter had mild heat to it, but the entire was much more flavorful, and really made the two day old Blueberry Fritter taste amazing. Try this at home with your Blueberry Fritters, yes only 7 seconds. I can't wait to get back to Stan's to try their...
