Sláinte is one of those rare moments of life you didn't know you needed. Centered on one of the best corners in Jack London, and with it's bright orange paint job, you can't help but notice it. Once inside it feels like you're home. With cozy booths & tables, stools and chairs, and a fairly long bar top, you're sure to find seating that fits your needs. There is also a fireplace that can be turned on (or off due to good ol summer heat) with 2 of what I consider to be 'grandpa chairs.' You know the kind of chair you picture your grandpa sitting in, telling his tales of memories past while you listen intently hanging on every word. The servers and bartenders try and greet everyone as they walk through the door and give each guest the best service they can. Tara is probably my favorite server and if course Joe is the best bar keep in town!! The fare here is quite unique to the area, as you don't find many Irish Pubs this side of the Bay Bridge. Jackie, the owner, has brought to Oakland her Irish family's traditional recipes and head chef Ted is there to make sure each and every dish is the way Jackie's family prepared it back home. Don't let the titles fool you though, Jackie is a master chef herself! From the Fish & Chips to the Brussel Sprouts to the Bacon Butty Sandwich, there is something on the menu sure to please every palate. If I start talking about the full array of Irish Whisky's this review would never end!!! Not to mention the Guinness ON TAP!! Full Disclosure though, I used to work here. But even when I wasn't working here I found myself drawn to it. Now I live in a whole other state, but I still have cravings for the Fish & Chips with the house made tartar sauce & (classy) spray bottle malt vinegar. If you happen to get over there for a Happy Hour Pint (of your choice) + powers[$10], tell 'em JJ sent...
Read moreA good friend of mine who loves this place and frequents often, invited me over to Slainte on Jan 27th to meet the owner to ask him the steps I need to take to book the bar for a group happy hour. I meet the owner, have food and drinks, and was very impressed about the cozy atmosphere. The person I spoke to gave me a card telling me to send an email to the address on the card and tell them what I need. So I did, telling them a little about me, my group and the dates I wanted. Waited a week and no response. I sent a follow up email a week later, and as of now late February, still no response. As I don't get to Oakland often, the same friend who introduced me to Slainte happened to be there on superbowl sunday and reminded the owner about the emails that I have sent and texted me back saying: "The event planner is reviewing your email and hopefully she will respond to you soon."
As of 19th February, 8 days after Super Bowl Sunday, I still have heard absolutely nothing from the venue and have already booked another. But their lack of willingness to respond promptly (or at ALL in my case!) to inquiries is not only unprofessional but also shows they are willing to ignore the chance to make really good money as my social events normally bring in about 30 people. I'm sure since this review is less than stellar, I won't be surprised if now I finally hear back from someone after this is posted, but as I already have booked another place it's a moot issue at this point. I may visit Slainte as an individual with a few friends, but never again will consider booking them for a...
Read moreMy favorite restaurant in Oakland. If you are struggling to decide where to eat, look no further.
The owners and staff are super friendly and laid back. It's the sort of place where regulars are recognized, and you feel cozy starting your first time in.
The food is incredible. Even with a smaller menu as the re-opening progresses, my husband and I still struggle every time to choose just a couple things. Everything that we have tried (most of the menu at this point!) is absolutely flawless. The fish and chips are perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The shepherds pie is hearty but not greasy or heavy. The bangers have the crispiest skin and lovely and interesting flavors inside. The chocolate cake is so good that I get it even though I shouldn't. The cocktails are perfect - best irish coffee I've ever had. The lamb sliders don't have words to describe them. Tap selection is small but varied; the beer is high quality. Plus, Magner's cider on tap! Favorite drink while in Ireland.
The vibe is wonderful with a variety of choices for seating type and amount of light at the table. The music isn't too loud - you can have a conversation without issues. You can bring a small crowd for pints or have a quiet board game. Go early if you want a seat at the fireplace! Perfect for a rainy day. I've always been able to find street parking without issue, but there is a garage just around the corner.
If you actually read this whole review, then you already know it's what you want. Take it from a local that this is the...
