Just moved to the area so trying out the pizza joints and this one caught my eye. It was a mixed bag, and I experienced the great, the good, and the ugly, thus my aggregate review of 3 stars. I ordered three items: wings, the Funghi pizza, and the Carne pizza. Gonna start with the wings. I ordered via UberEats (had a gift card) and although the online menu lists a Dragonfire sauce, it was not available on UberEats. So I went with Buffalo. The Buffalo sauce is pretty much just salt and butter with a dash of cayenne, didn't get any heat out of it. The wings however were very good. Large and juicy, good stuff. And a nice twist is they offer gorgonzola rather than bleu cheese, and I thought it was a nice change from the usual. Giving the wings a 4/5. Carne pizza: Great stuff. Crust is delicious, the salami and pepperoni and other toppings are all great, the house-made sauce I ordered extra of and I definitely recommend that, because even with extra I thought it was a touch dry but overall the pizza was still great. Giving this a 5/5. Funghi PIzza: I don't know what went wrong here. It's so many levels below the wings and the Carne. Maybe the mushrooms got burned? They were very rubbery. But whatever the case, it tasted like an ash tray. I get nothing out of the sauce they use for the base and it's very dry. These poor mushrooms were apparently incinerated to tastelessness and it was a struggle to get just one slice down. So I don't know. Giving this 1 or 2/5 stars, leaning 1.
So I'm averaging it all out at 3. If I return I definitely have favorites; I would stick to the red sauce, and order lots of extra. The wings are good, but need some more kick to them. And don't order the...
Read moreMy partner and I went in for a meal - we had heard great things about the food!
When we first stepped inside we were hit with a wave of smell. Not of food, but of grey water. It's the putrid smell of old drainwater, which immediately told me that cleaning and sanitation were not a high priority. We were seated at a wobbly table that had a coaster under one leg. The coaster had gotten wet with all the water on the floor so it had fallen apart and the table was still wobbly. The table was also wet showing that it had recently been wiped down, but the water on the table smelled badly as well, so I highly doubt they had changed the water in the sanitizer bucket within 2 hours as required by health code.
From our table we could see the kitchen, complete with the cooks handling phones and adjusting their masks, who would then go straight to handling ready to eat food with the same gloves they used for their other actives without washing their hands and changing their gloves in between. This was during the Coronavirus mask mandate when masks were required and many of the staff members were either not wearing masks, or were wearing them incorrectly with their nose exposed, thus rendering the entire practice futile.
Our server came over to us and asked what she could get started for us. We apologized to her, telling her we had a personal emergency and needed to leave. We left without eating, so I am unable to comment on the food - but after seeing how little they prioritize cleanliness and proper sanitation, I don't think I would be able to stomach the food, even if it...
Read more*5-stars for sure!!! I was delighted to dine at Blue Highway Pizzeria, their 2130 E. Silver Spring Blvd. location on Sunday, May 15, 2022. Hands-down, one of the best pizzerias I’ve experienced!
Bethany waited on our table and almost immediately she remembered me as the gal who had messaged the Pizzeria with a few questions about the menu selections earlier the week before. Bethany was very conscientious and knowledgeable about the ingredients in each dish. I was pleased to find that their menu had two different types of pizza crusts to choose from that I could actually have: a cauliflower/tapioca combination and a traditional gluten-free option (certainly a perk I’ve never encountered before.) They also offer a traditional white wheat crust variety for those that like their crust that way.
I ended up ordering two different pizzas, both with the cauliflower/tapioca crust; the best cauliflower crust I’ve ever experienced! A perfect thin that still holds up to multiple toppings, with a slightly crisp edge-delicious!!!!!
I can’t wait till next time when I will be trying one of their Piadine flatbread sandwiches, their gluten-free option. The roasted lamb, mint pesto aioli, mixed greens, red onions, feta, parmesan, and red wine vinaigrette option comes highly recommended and since I love lamb in the first place, that’s the one I’m going to try!
I was so grateful for the conscientious effort they put forth on behalf of my individual auto immune issue related dietary restrictions. They know what they’re doing-perfect...
