Pizza Express — Restaurant in Ocala

Until today, being from "the city", our quest for "NY pizza" resulted in one or two very close calls.

First, don't dare be put off by the square footage (room enough for 3 lonely tables).  Yes, it's much like a small storefront Chinese restaurant that is "eat-in"—but REALLY "take-out".  All the better for counter person Casey to welcome you with a friendly greeting and a smile brimming with personality.  He is only too happy to explain that Express is one of the few shops that serve slices—just like NY.  Therein lies the reason we came in.  We were weary of carrying on our pizza pursuit without having to purchase a whole pie. Now, let's get to the thin layer of dough covered with "tomata" sauce and "mootz".  It was like a trip back to Brooklyn.  The crust was tender with just the right amount of crackle; the savory homemade sauce was just the right side of sweet; the cheese perfectly stringy.

I can vouch for PE's right to call it NY pizza . . . the Man(uel) with the paddle made his bones tossing pies at Pronto Pizza on 42nd & 5th.  I know.  I used to grab lunch there when I worked in the area.

I moved to Ocala a year and a half ago from New York and besides my family, the only thing I've missed is the pizza. Believe me when I say that not only have I tried almost every single pizzeria in Ocala and surrounding areas but I've driven hours just to find real pizza. I once again opened all the food apps and Google to search and Pizza Express popped up. I never saw them in the results before and they had a bunch of great reviews. I'm always skeptical when it comes to a place claiming to have "New York-style" pizza and I decided to drive there immediately. Let me tell you.. this is the taste I have been missing. This pizza is delicious and you can tell how much time, detail and knowledge has gone into the perfection of the pie. I rarely give negative reviews but I can't deny how bad this pizza was. The employees were friendly and I was hoping for a surprise from this hole in the wall. It took a longgg time (maybe 25 minutes) to cook the pie and it still might have been undercooked? When i grabbed the slices EVERYTHING, literally EVERYTHING slid off.
