In spite of being relegated to the outdoors for pandemic reasons the elegant ambiance of the place prevailed. We shared the seafood plate which was comprised of shrimp, scallops, crabcake and fresh fish (by request they kindly substituted the flounder for drum do we could try it). First, the wait staff was excellent and attentive. Our food arrived quickly and all at proper temperature. Our sides were 1) sautéed squash which was tasty and 2) sliced cooked carrots which were cooked to perfection and delicious. For the seafood entree the shrimp was a touched more cooked than I prefer, the broiled scallops were very tasty, well seasoned and needed no other sauces, the crab cack was delicious only just shy of what I'd consider outstanding. The drum is considered a signature dish for the Flying Melon. It was well seasoned and well prepared but I was not wowed by it. Just a personal preference. By all means this was a welcomed dining event and I would easily recommend this restaurant to others.

If you're looking for fine dining with down to earth country appeal, this is the place. If it's five people or more, they suggest reservations. Be ready to loosen the wallet a little, and feel good about it when the evening concludes. Flying Melon is a several course meal experience. The bar prepares well made mixed drinks. Fried green tomatoes on the apps list aren't to be missed. Fresh seafood selections are favorites, though the filet mignon choices are also delectable. Find room for dessert. The key lime pie and chocolate torte are especially decadent. As befits such an establishment, staff goes out of the way to bring a memorable evening. Treat yourself to an unforgettable dining experience in an unforgettable place.

Great food, service, and overall experience! My wife and I chose the "Flying Melon" to enjoy the last meal of our 25th year together and thoroughly enjoyed it. Phenomenal food and a wonderful wait staff helped to put the cherry on top of this enchanted evening. We had a couple different scallop dishes, a salad, lemon cheesecake with strawberry sauce, and creme brulee. Honestly, you probably can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment (and a couple others) to anybody visiting Ocracoke Island. Tell them Nathaniel sent you! (Actually, don't do that. It would be weird and nobody here knows me ;)

My husband and I took our three children (ages 15 to 21) to brunch. The building is new and the atmosphere is nice. The young lady who greeted us did not know much about the menu. She was unable to answer whether Coke or Pepsi was served.

The menu was not large, but we each chose something different. While we waited for our food, we watched the staff work. Each table had a piece of paper on top which could be used to draw on by children and adults alike. However, I was hit on the head three times as the waitstaff walked by to place new paper on tables. They held the paper over their heads like a flying cape instead of rolling it up and taking it to the table. One young man kept rubbing glass or plastic containers together making loud noises as he took the containers to the table. Another waitress was on her cellphone outside the bathroom doors which were in view of the dining area.

Our food arrived very quickly. In our opinion, the grits were undercooked and under seasoned. They were very grainy. The shrimp was gummy and overcooked. The french fries were greasy. My husband ordered a crab cake and found that the outside was cooked perfectly, but the inside tasted under cooked. He did have a long hair in his meal that we found a little disturbing. I ordered a hamburger, and it was cooked medium rare, which I admit I really enjoyed since you can't get one cooked like that in NC anymore due to health regulations! However, it was under salted.

Overall, our family felt that the cost of the food was average for the area, but the taste was below average. The restaurant was fairly loud due to what sounded like horse play by young adults. We could not tell where the sound came from or whether it was staff or patrons. I don't think that we will be giving this restaurant...

We were so excited to eat at the Flying Melon, but so disappointed. We waited over an hour which would have been fine, but when we were seated we were told they were out of oysters , scallops, 2 of the 3 fresh fish choices, pasta , the fillet and even the burger! After we did order, the waitress returned to tell us they no longer had two of the featured sides. So we said fine and changed to a loaded mashed potato and steamed fresh vegetables. When our food arrived we were told we are out of potatoes, we gave you rice. It was plain white rice and cheap out of a bag frozen mixed vegetables. My pecan crusted red drum was bland as a piece of paper. The shrimp bisque soup we ordered never came to the table. The highlight of the meal was the fig appetizer, it was delicious. All in I took my family of 6 out for what should have been a great meal and it was a bomb. Now, I rarely write a bad review, because I have worked in the service industry during the pandemic and I know you can have a bad night, however you should do something to provide customer service when you are totally dropping the ball...comp an appetizer, explain what happened, offer a free dessert. Something ....not were out, here's some rice that will be $280.00 please... I would nor recommend this restaurant to...

Atrocious customer service. Stay far, far away if you have food allergies! We have been eating here on annual trips for years, but that will now come to and end after how the staff treated us here. I called ahead to make a reservation, and the woman who answered the phone not only denied my reservation, she could not even explain what their reservation policy actually was (she attempted a few times but kept changing her words). I then stopped by the restaurant to add our name to the list, and the gentlemen couldn't give us a time estimate for how long the wait was. He kept responded saying, "I have to figure it out. I need to look at things. I'll let you know later after I figure it out." One of the guests in my party has life threatening food allergies. We attempted to explain them to our sever, and she responded saying, "the kitchen is too busy tonight to accommodate special requests." When you are too arrogant and don't care about negligently disregarding something that than can physically cause someone harm, you need to reevaluate your career. I was absolutely disgusted by how we were treated. I will never visit this place again, and I highly encourage all to avoid it at all costs, unless you enjoy supporting a bigoted...
