We were in Ojai because my son was taking a test at a near by school. We were walking around town and walked by the Tortilla house, they were closed so we went into a near by business. When we came out not only was the Tortilla House open but there was a lone down the block. I inquired from a few people in line what all the fuss was about. I was very mature of factly told that this was the best burrito, not only in town, but possibly the best burrito on the west coast. Now I love a good burrito and I feel I've had many near perfect burritos so I just had to eat here and put it to the test. I waited for my son to be done with his test, as he fancies himself a connoisseur of the bean and cheese burrito. I picked him up and we headed to The Tortilla House immediately. We waited in line, looked at the very simple menu, which is very refreshing, to me that says this is what they specialize in and the have perfected it and have no need for filler items on the menu. Burritos, taco, quesadillas, that's it, you choose your meat and toppings but you're only getting one of these three items. While we waited patiently and with growing anticipation in line, I noticed that there was a woman in the back hand making the tortillas as they were ordered. To say I was excited is an understatement. I ordered the al pastor with beans, rice, and cheese. The ingredients were obviously cooked that day, probably as I passed by earlier while they were closed, everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The beans and rice tasted like my grandma used to make, they were homemade ingredients in a tiny shop and they were wonderful. The tortilla was a work of art, rolled out and cooked with knowledge that only comes from true love of your craft. I cannot express how incredibly impressed I was, how happy this burrito made my palate, how exquisite the flavors blended together. I cannot say it was the best burrito I have ever had, but it...
Read moreWent here for lunch for the first with my partner. Line out the door. It went pretty quick. We each ordered a burrito. Flour tortilla was fresh, warm and tasted homemade.
Let’s face facts. In Ventura County, the corn tortilla is the king. For people that don’t know, only northern states in Mexico are known for flour tortillas. Sonora, Chihuahua and Baja. Everywhere else, it’s all about the maiz (corn) which is the food that fueled that countries native cultures before the European conquistadors showed up.
There are not many immigrants in Ventura County from the northern states. So it stands to reason that the corn tortilla is what we know here in Ventura.
There are not very many places that make homemade flour tortillas. I can count on one finger the places I know about that do make flour tortillas. It’s this place. The Ojai Tortilla House.
So for all the Norte Americanos and Gringos in VTA that need your flour tortilla fix, this is the place to go to. The alternative is to make them yourself.
I’d also like to comment on the couple negative reviews about this place not selling flour tortillas by the dozen. If you don’t see the word tortillería in the name, then it’s not a tortilla factory. Don’t drive here and get all butt hurt by that fact. The mistake was yours, and yours only. You shouldn’t post reviews that show...
Read moreWe live in Hayward, the San Francisco bay area. I found this place On maps and it had great reviews so we decided to stop On our way back from Disneyland. I always go thru 5 the grapevine but since I wanted very much to eat here I came thru Ventura side. To my surprise the were just closing. Meeting one of the employees of the restaurant outside, he told me that they had to close down because a tour bus stopped in and clear their food. I told them about our venture and how sadly disappointed I was but I understood. All he said was a generic sorry and that was it. If I was an employee of a bussiness I would of been more sympathetic since a peron came out of their way to try their food. I would of also suggested another place to eat near by. I understand things happen out of our control. I would of gladly returned to this establishment even though being out of my way if I would have received great service even though we did try the food. I love great food and we will travel to try it..... But this place...I doubt it. I realized I am a drop in the bucket to their income. But let it be known that I'm displeased by their attitude without even trying their establishment. Displeased from the San...
