My husband and I drive by this place at least twice a week on our way to Prairie Thunder, so we finally decided to go in after all of our intrigue. It was very clean and nicely decorated. Being our first time, I asked a couple of questions about the menu. One of the questions was, "Is the meat in the Philly cooked?", as I am pregnant (pregnant women are discouraged from eating cold cuts because of listeria). The crazy woman in the leopard hat taking our order asked me, "So what is with pregnant women not eating lunch meat now?" I explained to her the whole reasoning behind it, to which she replied, "Its nothing new. I had six kids and they're fine." I'm happy that her children were all born and born healthy, but I really didn't feel like discussing the politics of my eating with some lady I didn't know, nor explaining to her that not everyone is so blessed. Some women have to endure several losses before they can successfully carry a child to term, so maybe those women don't want to take ANY risks. So I told her, "I just want to order food." She pushed on, "Its like tuna and aspirin, My mother ate tuna and took aspirin and I was born." I tried to explain to her (although I don't know why) what about them are dangerous and then go back to my food order. She continued on, so again I told her I just want my food. She awkwardly apologized, made an excuse and finished ringing us out. We took a seat and waited for our food. When she brought my sandwich out, it was shocking that despite all of the discussion over the temperature of my freaking sandwich that the meat was still only lukewarm, not to mention how small the portion was (seriously, I measured it, 3.5"!). My husband got the 1910 Hot Dog, The bun was hot and delicious, the dog was room temp in the middle. After bringing our food home and heating it up, the sandwich was okay (definitely an insult to Philly) and half of my onions were actually paper-y onion skin. Conclusion: insulting service, over-priced...
Read moreTL;DR: We’ve had lots of good experiences and yummy breakfasts here in the past, but tonight was a bad experience.
Me and my sister wanted to hit up Kamps for an after-dinner treat, and decided to use the drive through. It was kinda obvious that that area doesn’t get much attention, so after a few minutes we just went inside. We didn’t wait too long, so this on its own isn’t a huge deal.
It took a minute to get rung up, even though there was no line and there were folks in the kitchen joking around (which, fine, they all seemed to be line cooks, but still). We ordered a vanilla latte, a caramel macchiato, and a vanilla cupcake, then took a seat.
Quick tangent: while waiting for our drinks, I noticed another customer who seemed to be waiting impatiently for their order. They went to the bar to talk to the cashier about their forgotten food and they got it a few minutes later. While this doesn’t affect our direct experience, I still think that it gives color to the general atmosphere of Kamps on this day/time.
Our cupcake was super dry, though once we got past the outer rim of the cupcake it was okay. I think the worst thing was the drinks, I was served a (very dry) cappuccino while my sister’s latte didn’t have much vanilla in it. I thought about asking them to redo my drink, because I really had my heart set on a macchiato when I came in, but I honestly didn’t have any confidence in their barista/cashier at this point.
Lastly, before we left, my sister noticed that the barista/cashier was making themselves some sort of drink (or at least, we hope they were making it for themselves because they were drinking it😂), even though there were customers at the cash register.
I’ve been here with my sister several times for breakfast and I’ve never been disappointed (the boxcar burrito is kinda greasy but I get it every time). Kamps is great for breakfast, but I don’t think that I will be hanging out there in...
Read moreMy recent visit to Kamps was an experience that exceeded expectations, largely thanks to the charismatic and humorous Aaron. His welcoming demeanor set the tone for a wonderful visit. Walking into Kamps, we were greeted by Aaron's infectious energy, which instantly made us feel at ease and added a personal touch to our dining experience.
Although initially disappointed by the unavailability of hotdogs, this minor setback turned into a serendipitous culinary adventure. I decided to try the Smokestack Cuban, a decision I didn't regret. The sandwich, a harmonious blend of pulled pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and mustard nestled between slices of fresh ciabatta bread, was nothing short of excellent. The flavors were well-balanced, with the mustard adding a nice zing that complemented the savory meats and melted cheese perfectly.
The ambiance of Kamps deserves a mention too. The interior was inviting and well-maintained, contributing to an overall pleasant dining environment. It's clear that attention to detail is a priority here, both in the food and the setting.
While I didn't get to try the pretzel dog on this visit, it's definitely on my list for next time. Based on my experience, I am confident it will be as delicious as the Smokestack Cuban. In conclusion, Kamps is a gem that offers not just great food but also an engaging atmosphere, largely thanks to the wonderful staff, especially Aaron. I'm already looking forward to...
