We've been twice. Tried it as we were in the area looking for a late dinner. Weeknight visit was fun, food good, staff very helpful. This place has 3 bar areas we sat in the area with what I would call a dining bar. High top tables and booth seating for two. Bar area had seating as well. This bar area is closest to the bathrooms. They have a sports bar area with TVs, high top tables and booths for four. The middle bar is sort of curve shaped with people setting around. I didn't notice if it had table seating. We have set in the "dining bar" and in the sports bar area on our visits. We started with the fried pickles appetizer. I got a reuben with a side of slaw and hubby got the Nashville Hot chicken with a side of sidewinder fries. Fried pickles were seasoned and breaded, served hot with ranch dipping sauce. Not too salty at all. Reuben was pastrami, kraut, swiss cheese & 1000 Island on marble rye. It was delicious, proportions were even. Bread never got soggy. One thing that I would have loved would have been some spicy mustard available, but that's how I roll with my reubens. The side of slaw I loved. It wasn't vinegary nor was it drowning in mayo. It was a crisp lovely addition to my sandwich. Hubby had the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. He was told that they no longer served the Nashville hot sauce on the chicken, but on the side. Tip: if you get it this way, stir the cup as the oil floats to the top and the heat sinks. Chicken was crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The bun was the perfect foil for soaking up any heat. The chicken is also good with out the bun. Sidewinder fries are french fries, but the way they're cut they kind of twist, but not in a curly fry kind of way. Think thick steak fries with a curve. Very good. Our second time we got the same only I hot the Nashville Hot chicken and he got the reuben, same sides as the first time. Food just as delicious, service good, but a little slower. We asked if they had spicy mustard and the chef came to our table to double check on what we were asking. They only had yellow mustard. He was very nice about it. Also, this time the Nashville hot sauce came on the chicken and not the side. I think I like it better on the chicken and not the side. Beer selection, good with domestics and local brewery available. Also, cocktails and wine...
Read moreMy travels have brought me to Oklahoma this week. I did my research and found that Oklahoma has some of the best country fried steak (chicken fried steak) in the country. The Mug was my second stop on my quest for the best country fried steak in the country. Halee was my server and she was very friendly and polite. Immediately I noticed her top reminded me of being in a Hooters restaurant. Ok, as long as she's comfortable but then I noticed the other servers wearing the same top. Thats not why I was here.
I ordered the southwest egg rolls. Now these tend to be a hit or miss but they were delicious here. Altho I personally think that if they put them in egg roll wrappers instead of tortilla, they would be even better. She then brought my salad. They don't have croutons here, they use french fried onions instead. That was weird, but hey, I'm in the mid west, I'll try something weird. I'm a little torn with the overall taste of the salad but I'm used to cheese and croutons. It's not my thing, but the salad was crisp and fresh.
Now, the country fried steak. Let me tell you it's very clear it's homemade from a ribeye. If there was even a doubt, the bit of fat on the steak enforced it was a real ribeye! It was really good, but I can't say it was the best I ever had. The garlic mashed potatoes were a little over powering with the garlic, which is why its 4 stars.
All in all, I would totally come back here again and order the same meal. And if you follow me on google, you know I very rarely will say that!
Great job Halee and everyone else! I visited sunday evening the 6th at 7 pm.
Follow me for more candid and honest reviews!
As a rule, I don't EVER tell a restaurant I review until after the meal is over and it's time to go. This allows for a fully genuine visit.
Thanks...
Read moreThe Mug Scratch Kitchen and Tavern, located on South Meridian Avenue in Oklahoma City, is a casual dining/drinking establishment with a focus on televised sports entertainment. Although the menu includes bar food such as wings and nachos, it also features soups, sandwiches, and entrees.
We arrived shortly on a Thursday afternoon shortly before 3:30 for a late lunch/early dinner. The entrance opens to a bar, where most – if not all – of the seats were taken. It was loud and boisterous for a mid-afternoon.
We were immediately greeted and seated, as there were plenty of tables available in the dining room. To the left of the booths was another bar, where the clientele there were more subdued.
I ordered the chicken quesadilla, which came with sides of sour cream and salsa. The quesadillas were very hot to the touch and took a couple minutes to cool down. They were filled with plenty of chicken and cheese, and made for a satisfying meal.
The turkey club sandwich was also pleasing, with plenty of fries. The sandwich was moderately piled with shaved turkey. Again, the dish did it's job in satisfying the appetite.
My only complaint was that the bar near the entrance was very loud, with foul language clearly heard throughout the restaurant. I've been in the military for 21 years, so I wasn't offended, but there's a time and place for such behavior, and an establishment that could very well have young diners certainly isn't the place.
If one doesn't mind a loud bar while catching a ball game, then this place would be fine. Grab an average meal and enjoy. I just wouldn't bring children here, or expect to enjoy eating in a relatively quiet and civil...
