I visited the Jersey Mike’s in Orange City on May 31st around 6 PM and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. As someone with Celiac disease, I appreciate when restaurants make a sincere effort to accommodate gluten-sensitive customers. While this location may appear gluten-friendly at a glance, I would strongly advise those with Celiac or serious gluten sensitivities to consider other options.... such as the Deland location, which has consistently treated us with care and respect.
During our visit, I ordered four subs—two regular for my kids and two gluten-free for my wife and myself (we both have Celiac). The first two subs were prepared without issue. However, once we mentioned the need for gluten-free preparation, the tone and demeanor of the staff member assisting us shifted dramatically. The woman at the cutter seemed visibly frustrated and impatient, and despite clearly stating both orders were for individuals with Celiac, she began preparing one of them using shared equipment without taking basic precautions to prevent cross-contamination (which I know can never be fully guaranteed).
What made the experience worse was the way it was handled publicly. As a few other customers entered the store, the staff member announced that the delay was due to “multiple gluten-free orders.” This was unnecessary and made us feel singled out and blamed for what should have been a routine request handled with professionalism and care.
To be clear: I don’t expect special treatment. I simply expect staff to listen, take appropriate steps to minimize risk, and not treat our dietary needs as an inconvenience or try to embarrass us in a passive aggressive way. The way our situation was handled caused enough frustration that I chose to step away and wait at the front of the store to avoid conflict.
Celiac disease is not a lifestyle choice—it’s a serious medical condition. It’s not something we treat lightly, and it’s disheartening when restaurant staff do things like this. If you don't want people with these special conditions in your location, please don't offer food that lures us in. You have no idea how excited! I am to have a fairly 'Normal Sub', and a tasty one at that.
Thankfully, the Deland Jersey Mike’s has always set a great example of how to handle these requests. They’ve never made us feel like a burden, and they go out of their way to ensure safety with kindness and professionalism.
For nearly $70 spent, my family and I should not have walked away from our Orange City visit feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and anxious about our food safety. I hope this feedback is taken seriously, as it reflects an opportunity for improvement and better training—particularly around food allergies and sensitivities.
I am only sharing information I would want to know about my staff had situations...
Read moreOk, I have been a loyal Jersey Mikes fan eating at the ones in Lake Mary, Altamonte, Maitland and Orlando. Never had a bad experience yet. Know the owner from Lake Mary. Not sure who the owner is of Orange City. Gave it three times before I decided to write this review. Don’t want the kids that are in there to have punitive actions rather teach them to take their job serious. Teach them that cleaning the counter, tables, floor, in between the rush and during the rush is important. Third time I’ve been in here over three months, and every time mostly same crew, standing in back room on their phones when place is a mess. Tonight actually heard how it was so slow today, yet big piles of food trash on floor, counter messy, slicer not cleaned. Told story of how other workers have sliced their fingers on the slicer. I have worked in fast food before and I know during the rush that things are hard to keep up with but good managers teach them how and the importance of keeping a clean store. One of the crew tonight actually noticed that I was staring at the slicer and then took the towel to wipe it down. Yes it was at closing time this time but the other times were not. The other Jersey Mikes I referenced have never looked like this once, even during the rush. Teach them to take pride in their work, pay them good and reward them for teamwork. It will go a long way in there next job. Remember it’s not their fault, it’s their leaderships fault. Mr. Owner please teach them! You can’t beat fresh meat right off the block, and great bread. Mikes Way should be more than just the fixing’s but rather Mikes Way should be the leadership model too. I’ll be back and looking for the Jersey Mikes in Orange City to be...
Read moreEvery time I come to this jersey mikes there’s always an issue. All the times before the sandwich was sloped together with ingredients dripping and falling out like the sandwich was just slammed together with no appreciation. I held myself back from making multiple reviews but today I just can’t hold it back anymore . I went there to get a sub and got there at 12:00. Ordered my sandwich and sat down to wait as always . Multiple people come in behind me to start ordering , next thing you know I’m noticing people that came in long after me are getting there sandwiches and paying already . It is now 12:16 . I get up and stand by the register to make notice I still have not gotten my sandwich . It’s now 12:20 and they are asking me if I’m here to pick up an online order , I said no I ordered a sandwich earlier , do you have to make it up now even after 20 minutes of waiting ? The lady I talked to didn’t even know and had to go and ask a coworker if the sandwich was made or not and go figure it isn’t made, they tried to start it but I had to say don’t start it because I have to get back to work and can’t wait any longer . Every single time I go to this location I get nasty attitudes and people always hiding in the back talking and being on their phones not paying attention to customers CLEARLY . It sucks because I’ve had such a love for jersey mikes until I started going to this exact location and makes me second guess eating there . Needs all new staff because the Jersey mikes I know used to make there sandwiches like no other and always had me coming back , now here no effort , no hospitality, no...
