Mirakutei is a gorgeously appointed restaurant serving fantastic Japanese cuisine at reasonable prices, but when it comes to operations, the performance of the serving staff does dishonor to their place of employment. If our Sunday afternoon visit appeared as a scene a jidaigeki film, they would be forced to commit seppuku.
There's a sign out front advertising that Mirakutei is hiring for just about every position: servers, runners, back of house, etc, so we expected things might be a little bumpy. That said, our observation of the number employees seemed more than adequate for the number of diners within; sadly, these employees were poorly trained, brand new hires with no experienced supervisor running the show, or just not cut out for this line of work.
We stood in front of the host stand (sans host) for at least 10 minutes, despite having made eye contact with the bartender, two sushi chefs, and two different servers, one of whom would turn out to be...you guessed it: the host! Around the 10 minute mark, the bartender finally addressed us, informing us that someone would "be there shortly". Shortly ended up being almost another five minutes. Other parties that entered behind us, and seeing the same things we were seeing, left in frustration. We waited it out.
Once seated, both the host and our server seemed completely out of their element, unfamiliar with both their individual tasks and responsibilities, serving etiquette, and with the operation of the restaurant in general. It was like watching first year acting students play the part of a server, without having been given a script, or any time to prepare for the role. The host in particular was so befuddled and awkward, he seemed more like a robot with a faulty AI, or an alien wearing human skin. Our server was simply green, or acted like it, but friendly enough, and apologetic when he forgot both my wife's green tea, and my miso soup.
Service aside, the food was wonderful. I ordered two sets of sushi rolls: the Burnside Bridge, and the B-Side 6 (which, confusingly, has 8 pieces). We humorously overheard a conversation between our server and the sushi chef, who were debating whether or not B-Side was short for Burnside, and whether or not the chef had accidentally made two of the exact same roll (he did not). My wife went with the Sapporo Miso ramen, made spicy, which she enjoyed thoroughly. The aforementioned green tea and miso soup we ordered never arrived, and were thankfully deducted from the check at the end.
Mirakutei can be translated as "a place to eat and enjoy", and this is true, assuming you are capable of being patient, forgiving, and cool-headed, when all the moving parts of the machine working around you seem to be one step away from collapsing into utter bedlam. I hope that the management of Mirakutei are able to address their staffing issues, both their advertised short-handedness, and the seemingly utter dearth of useful training. The Japanese people are known for their focus, precision, and pursuit of perfection; other than the food, Mirakutei aims for the center of the Rising Sun, and misses the...
Read moreGot the house tonkotsu ramen (spicy), hamachi belly nigiri, and green tea tiramisu to-go around 5pm on a wednesday.
Got chopsticks but no fork (for the tiramisu) or spoon (for the ramen), but not a huge deal, as I can sip the broth & use chopsticks for the cake. No soy sauce for the nigiri was a disappointment. Service on the phone was great.
The food was lackluster. The slice of fish on the sushi was really thick, which you’d think ‘great! Value for money’, but it was big enough to throw off the textural contrast and make it less of a pleasant experience by mouthfeel. Could have been saved some with the flavor contrast of soy sauce, but that was missing.
Ramen broth was solid. Nothing special but fine. The char in the charshui was excellent (some might call it hard, but I liked the grill marks). Noodles were good (and packaged separately!). Egg was decently jammy. Shitake texture was terrible. Like they were rehydrated to use for broth but then kept in there? So rubbery.
Green tea tiramisu was also not good. Not pleasant on the eyes, which I, for one, can definitely get over, but it was compleeeetely one note in flavor and texture, to the point where it’s almost inedible because what are you actually eating is it just matcha powder?? because it’s dusted on the top and coats your whole mouth in a disappointing fashion.
Overall, not a good experience. I hate leaving a bad review but the Portland area has soo many good ramen spots, and this doesn’t even come close to being one I’d...
Read moreWe decided to come here last night and try it out after looking for a sushi place near us. The pictures looked promising. The restaurant was beautiful. However, the service was some of the worst service I’ve had in a very long time. Not only did our server Matthew only check in on us two times throughout the whole night, but somebody else had to clear our table and bring us What we ordered while he stood off to the side, He also forgot our desserts and still charged us for it yet seemed offended when we asked him to take it off our bill. I would understand if the restaurant was busy, however, that was not the case last night.
Attempting to ask for a refill, dessert, or even sauce to go with the sushi seemed as though I had asked our server for the most impossible task. Especially when we were met with eye rolls And we got spoken about to his colleagues after we had asked for him to remove the items we did not get off of our bill. I would say that I would like to give this place a second chance however, I did not have a pleasant experience here for my first time and I will not be recommending this place to...
