I actually found Hull's in Ormond Beach while looking for a seafood place to try while in town for a conference. I had some recommendations for Hull's and knowing that Florida is known for grouper and many places serve conch, I found my seafood restaurant. Hull's does have free parking. However, Hull's also gets very busy. So much so that they have a valet who parks and retrieves your vehicle so you don't have to fight ages for a parking place. This is even in the middle of winter I might point out. Hull's very much fits the feel of a coastal fishing house and restaurant. Not overly decorated, the restaurant does a very good job with getting you in the mood to enjoy some great fish. Their chalkboard at the entrance advertising their specials even get a little punny. Speaking of being busy, definitely expect a crowd, even in the middle of the winter. Hull's gets good business and as I will comment below, they are definitely coming for their seafood. Service here was excellent. While seated at the bar, the server/bartender ensured my glass was full and was very happy about answering any questions I had. The server also made a very good recommendation for a beer (the Orange Blossom Honey Pilsner if I recall) which paired very well with my fish. For my meal, I had the two-fish plate which comes with two sides. For one of my sides, I had the crab gumbo (my first choice, sadly, wasn't available). The gumbo was very favorable and packed just the right amount of kick for a Cajun-inspired gumbo. I pretty much downed that cup of gumbo really quick it was that tasty. Then for my entree and other side, I had the rice as well as fried conch and blackened grouper. I paired my conch with the remoulade dip which enhanced the flavor of the conch. The conch itself was done just about right with the right amount of chew, very crispy and I very much enjoyed the conch. The rice also very good as well; nice and moist and well flavored and I would say pairs well with blackened grouper which was cooked just right. The grouper was moist and tender and their blackening added just the right amount of heat and flavor and of course, very fresh. The hushpuppies were also awesome as well. Not soggy with just the right amount of crunch on the outside and a great mouth feel as well; the remoulade dip works well with the hushpuppies...or you can do as I do sometimes and put a little butter on that hushpuppy. Did I mention they are pretty big as well so you get plenty of hushpuppy with your fish. My only gripe...I wish I had room to try their dessert hushpuppies as they sound very good. You know you've found a great restaurant when locals tell you to go here. And go here you should! If it's packed even in the middle of winter in the middle of the week, you know you will be in for a good time. So if you want seafood while you're in Daytona, come up AIA a couple miles and...
Read moreAs a snowbird, looking for some good seafood Hull's is a good place to visit. My wife and I went there on a weekday night. Look I'm not a critical type of a person, but we we're new in the area and we were looking to dine outside. We drove by this place many times and noticed they had a bar type counter in front. Upon arrival I asked my wife if she wanted to sit at the counter and look at the traffic or sit at the tables inside. A young hostess came outside and said there's no server for outside, but we could order at the counter inside and they'll bring it out to us, or dine inside. We decided to go inside and check out the menu first then make a decision. Once inside we looked around, read the specials, looked at the menu and noticed some tables outside in the back. We went out to the rear area and another hostesses explained we could eat outside or eat inside. Then we decided and were seated at a table outside. (I was a little baffled, but hey I went with it). A short time later a waiter apologized for the delay and took our drink order, waters with lemon. A short time after that a different waiter brought out a tray with 6-7 large waters on it and devided them up among the tables (no lemon). About 15 minutes later the waiter came back and again apologized for the delay. He took our order, wife ordered salmon with a garden salad and I ordered the fried cod platter. I asked the waiter if he could substitute the fried oysters and he advised me they couldn't do it. I said, no problem and I told him just don't give me any instead of wasting them. Now a time, later the order was brought out by another waiter. Sure enough there was a large portion of oysters on my plate. Also note my wife never got her salad.
Overall we both enjoyed the food that we had. The cod, shrimp, clam strips, coleslaw and grilled vegetables were very good. My wife told me she enjoyed here salmon. I forgot to take a picture of the food before digging in, but I was able secure one half way through. Omg, I just hated wasting all the oysters! The bill was nearly $50.00 for the both of us, mine alone was thirty. He subtracted the buck fifty for the missing salad. I felt this was reasonable for the amount of food that we got.
Other than the teenager staff that were clearly inexperienced (but hey this is the world we live in) the overall experience was ok. I would still recommend this if you're interested in...
Read moreWe were looking for the best seafood on Daytona Beach or in the close vicinity. Hull’s did not disappoint. Our Server was Icaro and he even knew where the items came from and how they were marinated and prepared. He made our experience so delightful. Our mixed drinks were flavorful and had the perfect blend of juices and alcohol. I ate the Blue Crab Gumbo 1st. For the spice in the dish, I could taste the individual ingredients and the sweetness of the crab. This gumbo could be a hearty meal in itself. Next we had 3 apps Calamari, Shark Bites and Gator Bites. The Calamari - its breading was light but had so much flavor we didn’t need lemon or the sauce. The rings were super tender and the tentacles crispy and light. A sweet succulent flavor. The Shark Bites - We were told it was blackfin shark. It was similar to a chicken bite with how juicy each piece was. The sauce paired with it, I personally want a bottle of. The Gator Bites - Super tender, almost had the mouth feel and taste of a pork carnitas, Cooked to Perfection. Let me also add that the time from the kitchen I found to be shorter than a local fast food restaurant and with the quality of a 5 star restaurant. Then we had our main entrees. A Maine lobster roll - Packed with flavor, no need for any condiments. You could see the shredded lobster and the claw pieces. A beautiful color to the meat, my side was beautiful delicious hush puppies. Crispy, yet pillowy in the middle with a sweet note. I want these as a daily snack. My partner had the sea scallops basket. Blacked and broiled to perfection. With the most delicious zucchini and squash. I give this place a personal 5 star rating and we would recommend it over any of the franchise locations or tour guide recommendations. By far the best seafood in the area and for half the price. The staff and ambiance is a bonus on the amazements provided...
