Thank you Charro Steak for bringing one of the best restaurants to the Oro Valley area! We live in Catalina and used to frequent this once Charrovida location since it was the most creative menu in a 30+ minute drive of us, so we were sad to see it go, however… Charro Steak is a refreshing change that offers a larger menu with the BEST selection of fine food in the area. The refresh inside is stunning and classy with a lifelike mural and decor that is especially Tucson, but still retained the casual-esque vibe that Charrovida had. Making it perfect for both a spur of the moment dinner choice and a special date night.
For appetizers, we got the oysters shooter style. These are a must - tasty, fun, & a great start to dinner! We also ordered the Ahi Ceviche, it rivals the ceviche at one of our favorite restaurants who specializes in it on River and Campbell. For entree’s we ordered the two specials. The Chef’s Catch was a perfectly cooked halibut that held more flavor than any fish we have ever tried (for context, my wife and I grew up in the Boston area near the Atlantic coast). Also, the Chef’s Cut, a strip steak our waiter Alex recommended to order Medium Rare, which was a perfect ‘medium rare,’ it also packed tons of flavor which we would place as one of the best steaks in the city. Finally, the peanut butter Tres Leches was an amazing finish. A great twist on one of my favorite desserts while my wife, who doesn’t usually go for Tres Leches, says it was one of her favorite desserts she’s tried in a long time. Also, again, Alex wow’ed us with his Espresso martinis for a liquid dessert. We sat at the bar and knew they were going to be good when we could smell the aroma of the espresso from our seats.
We went during their soft opening and it felt like they had been operating for years. The manager, Nicholas, was also extremely caring and eager for honest feedback for his location. We hope you will accept our 20 out of 10 rating on every metric from food to service to ambiance and we look forward to coming back for...
Read moreThis was our first and probably last visit. Our party of 8 with reserve atuonmade and deposit paid in advance was seated in a small crowded space against a wall in the back of the restaurant beside their oyster food prep area. Immediately behind us was a party of 14 drunks, shouting at each other. We literally could not hear the waitress at the end of our table talk when she spent a considerable amount of time describing what was not on the menu. When she came to us, standing behind in the 2-3 feet between us and the drunks it was very difficult to place our order but it was finally accomplished (so we thought).
We ordered a t-bone steak to split with the bone removed. We ordered salads and a side dish (nothing comes with the steak) and 2 glasses of the house can (very good). The side turned out to be cheese on top of the steak. After scrapping off the cheese the steak was very good. However when the bill came (with a 20% tip already added) we were surprised to see the total of over 190 dollars. 2 issues stood out. We were charged for the more expensive aged rib-eye and there was a 18 dollar zinfandel we had not ordered. All together, with tax and top, about a 30 dollar overcharge. I brought it to the waitress's attention and claim we had ordered rib-eye. Then called the manager who said it would be handled. We eventually got a new bill after being reminded several times the the waitress had heard rib-eye. The new bill was now 14 dollars less, not 30+ less, because the zin was still on the bill. Right below the 2 house vabs. The rest of our party was long ready to leave by now so I paid and we left.
I'm leaving we listened briefly to a truly outstanding Spanish guitarist on the outdoor patio. 4 in our party stayed for wine on the patio and raved. We were in a car pool and they were too pissed to stay. They were the couple bumping elbows with the...
Read moreWhile we were sad to see Charro Vida go, we are huge fans of Charro Steak. It’s our go to restaurant for date nights and meeting friends before basketball games (Bear Down!). Wound up dining on opening day of the soft opening week and they didn’t miss a beat. Food was spot on! The Pina Paloma, Stoney Point Oysters, chips & salsa and table side guac were pleasing starters. Had to pace ourselves knowing what lied ahead. For dinner, had our favorite steak: the carne asada, which was cooked to perfection and is THE BEST carne asada on the planet, esquites con crema (I could eat these all day, every day), ranch beans and the Hola Hemp Tamal Platter, which honestly is a MUST. As a classically trained chef, it’s one of the most balanced dishes I’ve ever experienced and it’s a true masterpiece. The warm tamale, grilled asparagus and a salad that makes you want to eat the salad, is bursting with flavor. Don’t let the words “vegan” fool you, it’s outstanding! Pamela, our server was friendly, and knowledgeable and the staff made sure our water was never empty. The quality of the food is exceptional and price points are better than most restaurants in town. They do have a happy hour from 3pm-6pm so I’d recommend giving Charro Steak a try if you haven’t already. Our kids will be so disappointed to hear we went without them 😂 Thank you Ray and Chef Gary for putting a Charro Steak in my neighborhood 🥰 Oh and don’t forget to grab a mint on the way out, now I’m...
