I'm a Maru sushi girlie, but I decided to give this new-ish place a try and I'm SO glad I did. I've ordered takeout for pickup here before and enjoyed it, but had some time to stop in today.
Great place! Very chill, somewhat romantic layout and is on the smaller side - say about 15 or less tables of varying size. There's no loud distractions and decor, instead it's just a nice quiet vibe that would be great for date night and conversations in general. I also really love the subtle anime stuff on the shelves and little purikura type photos - again, not loud and overbearing visually, just super tasteful, cultural decor that I really liked.
Service was very fast, I was in and out in less than an hour and the food arrived within 10 minutes. To be fair, it was around noon on a weekday and I was dining alone, so not exactly the busiest time of day for this area generally.
I got the gyoza appetizer, and the Crunch Bomb Roll. I gotta admit that the gyoza at Toba's is way better than Maru's - it's tasty and has a nice crunchy outside and a juicy, flavorful inside. Love the little salad-like mix that comes with it as well, and the plating was very cool.
The sushi itself was perfect, they had it arranged real fancy on the plate but I was so hungry I didn't snap a pic. Keep in mind these are not the usual smaller sized rolls - they got a thicc diameter and I enjoy the style. I have a somewhat small mouth and I was still able to take a whole slice in one bite. Forks are on the table along with chopsticks, so if you're really struggling the fork is there for you without having to ask for one. I really appreciate little details like that, it shows that they know who their customers are and are anticipating their needs ahead of time. Love that for us!
The ginger was good too - I can't speak for the wasabi since I don't do spicy. Next time I definitely want to try the tempura ice cream - I've seen photos of it and it looks like a real treat.
I also think this would be a perfect place for a small intimate party - I don't know if they allow patrons to rent the place out like that, but I think it'd be wonderful for a little intimate engagement party or something to that effect.
Definitely excited to come back here and try the grilled stuff since I've really only had their sushis so far. The waiters were very attentive and appropriately friendly as...
Read moreI had hoped to contact the restaurant directly, but I couldn’t find an email address. I’ll start by saying that I agree with the other reviewers that the sushi is excellent. The table shared a bowl of chicken fried rice and my husband couldn’t stop talking about how good it was. The veggies were obviously not frozen and it was the most beautiful fried rice we’d ever seen. My husband ordered some to take home for lunch the next day! The staff was very friendly and the line to pick up take out orders was practically nonstop the time we were there. That being said, there is a little more accommodation/awareness the staff could have concerning food allergies and sensitivities. My mom is visiting and we wanted a fun night out after a long week. She has a fairly bad dairy sensitivity due to years of maintenance chemo and we rarely go out because of it. Sushi is usually a good choice when we do because there’s not a lot of dairy in the cuisine and pretty easy to find options for her. Only minimal accommodations are needed by the kitchen: clean workspace and clean gloves to avoid cross contamination. She definitely told the server and asked a couple of questions which they answered graciously. However when we received our plates, they put one of my rolls on her plate and one of hers on mine. The plate they gave her had roll that contained cream cheese. They asked me to re-plate our rolls and a nearby server said it’s not her fault because the kitchen doesn’t read the tickets or plating instructions. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!! I’m cool when that happens between me and my husband because we have no issues but if there is very clearly a reason to be careful with plating, they must follow it! When looking at the bill at the end, only one of her rolls was marked as “dairy allergy”. That one was plated with my non dairy roll. It made us question whether they used clean gloves making her second roll. Maybe if the server marked both rolls as “dairy allergy?” My husband and I will be back again, but I don’t know if I could talk my mom...
Read moreEver heard of a Sushi Burrito? Me either, but it's amazing!
Since moving to Kalamazoo this has become my favorite sushi place to go to. Our neighbors offered me some of their extras one day, and I've been hooked ever since.
Toba has a good variety of sushi available to order. However the thing I'm hooked on is their "Sushi Burritos". Yep, it's pretty much what you'd imagine. Or if you can imagine one HUGE sushi roll stuffed with all kind of good stuff. I order the Toba Sushi Burrito and it's amazing because it's full of seafood goodness.
The staff is always friendly, and makes everything quickly, also being sure to yell "THANK YOU!" as you leave.
I highly recommend you give them a try!
(I am partial to the spicy mayo sauce)
My only complaint: Finding the place. When my neighbors told me where Toba is I thought they were crazy because I thought I saw everything in that area. Even driving past it I couldn't find it until I did a double-take. My reaction was basically in this order: Where is this place, I'm at the right address? Oh wait there's little markings outside Oh wait those are kanji or something Oh wait that says toba in a different font?
My point is that while the sign is interesting, I wish there was a smaller sign next to it that just had a plain (TOBA SUSHI). Otherwise the little toba kanji text blends in with everything else and hard to make...
