My fiancé and I had dinner at Raj Mahal just a few days after it opened, and I couldn’t wait to try it. Having grown up in an Indian household, I’ve always been pretty underwhelmed by the Indian food options in Kansas City. Usually, I just cook at home because nothing ever quite compares. But Raj Mahal completely exceeded my expectations.

The Mutton Rogan Josh tasted just like something I’d have at home—rich, authentic, and deeply comforting. The tandoori chicken wings were also fantastic, full of flavor and perfectly cooked. We ordered everything medium spice, and it had just the right amount of heat—enough of a kick without being overwhelming.

Worst Indian restaurant experience ever.

We ordered a fried fish appetizer that came out slimy, when we asked about it, they said it was because it’s “soy fish.” I’ve never heard of slimy fried soy fish and couldn’t find anything about it online either. The veggie rolls were served cold, and the Chicken Changezi had zero flavor just dry, tough chunks of chicken drowning in tomato sauce. We also ordered the Mutton Rogan Josh, and the meat was so hard and chewy we were actually worried about our teeth.

When we raised concerns, no one followed up. The front desk manager (an Indian woman at the front desk) had an odd, unfriendly attitude, staring at us weirdly and spending most of her time chatting with the other staff. The only bright side: the servers themselves were polite and courteous.
