A Surprising Gem of Authentic Yunnan Cuisine in the Heart of Kansas City.
I am excited to tell you about a culinary gem I recently discovered—Top Soup Yunnan Noodle, in Overland Park, KS. In the vast landscape of Chinese restaurants in the United States, Yunnan rice noodles aren't usually what comes to mind. With most Chinese establishments serving Americanized interpretations or leaning heavily into the spicy, intense flavors of Sichuan cuisine, finding a restaurant that specializes in authentic Yunnan dishes can feel like a quest for a culinary unicorn—even in a cosmopolitan city like New York. So, imagine my delight when I stumbled across this spot during a recent visit to Kansas City.
Yes, you read it right. Kansas City, an unexpected locale for a Yunnan noodle shop, is now home to this wonderful eatery. As someone whose wife hails from the Yunnan region, I am no stranger to the unique, complex flavors the area has to offer. So when I caught a glimpse of Top Soup Yunnan Noodle from a gas station on a Thanksgiving visit, I was determined to give it a try on our next Kansas City visit.
What followed was an experience that exceeded all expectations. If you're planning a visit, I highly recommend immersing yourself in the authentic Yunnan taste by opting for the Original, Mala, or Spicy broths. Paired with delicate rice noodles and your choice of meat (we were thoroughly impressed by the eye of round), these broths deliver a palatable journey that is as comforting as it is exciting. In Yunnan, it's knows as "bridge crossing noodles".
But the culinary adventure doesn't stop there. Complement your noodle dish with their cucumber/beef salad. It's an authentic Yunnan dish that harmoniously blends crispness, juiciness, and robust flavors, and I must say, it is nothing short of a revelation.
Besides the impressive flavors and authenticity, what sets Top Soup Yunnan Noodle apart is the exceptional value it offers. The prices are outstandingly reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, which adds another layer of appeal to this already fantastic dining spot.
So there you have it, my unexpected culinary discovery in the heartland of America. If you find yourself in or near Kansas City, do yourself a favor and pay a visit to Top Soup Yunnan Noodle. I promise you, it's an experience worth repeating. As for me and my wife, we will...
Read moreI ordered takeout from here in early October 2024. The food was good but lacking in ingredients for some of our dishes. I ordered Happy Family which is a combo of beef, chicken, shrimp, scallop and crab. When I went to pickup my order they said they didn't have enough beef to complete my dish so could they substitute chicken? The Happy Family is more expensive because of the beef and seafood ingredients so I asked them to please substitute more shrimp and scallops. When I got home one of my orders was missing the side items- eggroll and crab wanton, and my dish was loaded with chicken, no beef and one scallop and one small piece of crab. Even though this was carry out, I tipped well and when I got home I discovered they had added an additional charge to my credit card for selecting friend rice as a side even though online it says your choice of white or fried rice. I called and tried to talk to someone at the resteraunt but they were not interested in our missing items and unsatisfactory substitutions. I'll go elsewhere and spend my money and tip people who care about a decent...
Read moreThe staff were professional and friendly. Fun atmosphere. Handicap parking at store front. When I asked what type of cuisine they serve I was told authentic Asian. It seemed authentic to me though I was born and raised in the Midwest and never traveled to Asia so I can't say from personal experience. I had the Kimchi rice noodles. They told me it's spicy and asked if I like it hot. I told them I do and it was actually spicy, which I appreciate. I have been to other international cuisine restaurants where I feel like they toned down the spiciness because I am Caucasian and I was disappointed because it wasn't hot. Not the case here. I didn't ask if the rice noodles are gluten free but most are and this is probably an option for those who want...
