This was our 2nd outing to Akira and I was very, VERY disappointed. First of all, the sushi is just "okay," yet you will be paying premium prices for your sushi at Akira.
The flavors are bland, the rice is inconsistent from one roll to the next and in some cases, the rice is far too overcooked and ends up like a hard, sticky paste instead of gummy, yet able to feel each grain individually.
They do not pack their rolls tight enough, so if you try to use chopsticks, it's going to break apart because the bottoms will stick to the board, so then you'll end up shoveling what's left of it into your mouth or just mixing it in with one of the sauces.
The atmosphere is most likely what you are paying for because the interior is nice and it "feels" upscale, but the waitstaff is not upscale.
The gentleman that served us tonight came off very abrupt to start the night off, but got much nicer after we ordered. But before all of our food was on the table - and after making me wait ~10 minutes for a refill - he brings 3 to-go cups to a table with 4 people. That would have been our first refill and we didn't even have all of our food yet, but here he is, telling us to 'leave' by putting to-go cups that we never asked for in front of us while forgetting about the 4th person (my wife).
Then I had to remind him about one of the rolls, to which he said "Oh, they didn't call it," but they had . . . . he was just too busy conversing with his friends who happened to be sitting behind us. Apparently he's losing weight, looks great, and they took his picture with us in it. lol. I know more about that waiter than I care to.
At any rate, I spoke to the manager and let him know my family will not be dining there again. We are big sushi eaters and eat sushi at least twice a month because it's our kids' favorite thing to eat.
I have no problem taking the $110 I spent at Akira to a different establishment that won't try rushing me out the door.
I tipped the waiter anyway, but only because of how expensive our ticket was. But I only tipped him about 25% of what he would have received had he not done what he did. He got a $10 tip, which was probably more than he deserved.
If you want good sushi, do not eat at Akira's. Go to the Sushi House in Broken Arrow (it's on 71st near the BA). It's way better, consistent, and 1/2 the...
Read moreBLUF/SUMMARY: Overall average sushi joint serving up options (like Uni and Omikase) not traditionally available in other Tulsa/local spots. Unfortunately hampered by inconsistencies in fish, rice, and prep quality as well as lack of consistent availability of certain items.
DETAILS: We went on a Saturday night with some close friends. Being a sushi lover myself, as you now know, I was excited to try this place. The Uni and Omikase availability drew me in.
Upon seating and drink orders, I was disappointed that Sapporo or Kirin was not available on tap… bottles it then was. More disappointing was our waiter’s recommendation to not do the Omikase due to “fish only arriving 2x a week on Monday and Thursday” so things wouldn’t be as fresh. Why they weren’t prepared for a Saturday night was beyond me and shows a bit of lack of planning and prep. They were also apparently out of bluefin and another fish I don’t recall. At least the waiter was honest… still, disturbing to say the least.
Thus I ordered a couple of basic rolls to go alongside a handful of nigiri’s, including an Uni (sea urchin) piece that I later found out was $10/piece. Verdict overall on the sushi: decent quality and taste for majority of my order (see attached pic for reference). Main issues were the Uni piece which was a tad discolored and definitely did not taste as fresh as it should. The rice was also disappointing - on the bland side (vinegar to sugar ratio was off) and very sloppy on presentation. Innards of my masago nigiri and rolls were falling out. It just showed a lack of care in prep, a lack of attention to detail with a higher importance put on speed.
I’ve been eating sushi since I was 3… so over 40 years later and eating sushi around the world, I admit my standards are a bit high. Akira unfortunately falls into that “been there done that” category that makes it a bit forgettable. To improve, especially if they are charging at that higher price point compared to other local sushi spots, they need to address consistency, availability, and quality with much better...
Read moreTrying to describe my collective experience with this place over a period of like 10+ years. Overall, not great honestly, but I want to be fair. Historically, the service has not been great. Not overtly awful, but not what I would expect from any sit-down restaurant. That being said, I went a few weeks ago with people who go a LOT and are friends with some people there. Our service was decent then, but literally every other time I've been the service has been mediocre. As in having to ask for drink refills and/or absolutely bare-minimum attention from our waiter.
Where my biggest critique lies is with the quality of the sushi. I have just always been disappointed in the quality of the sushi. Any place I go, if the sushi is good enough, that's enough for me to keep coming back. I'll get it to-go if I hate the service, nbd. But it's just okay. Nothing spectacular. Not critiquing the quality of the fish, but the sushi itself I'm just never really impressed with. I can go to Asiana Express and get rolls I know I'll drool over, and at a better price point. Not at Akira. I don't come here unless someone else wants to go.
I understand people absolutely love this place, but I honestly...
