The Walrus Oyster & Ale House — Restaurant in Oxon Hill

In summary, food was excellent and I will come back. Actually, I did go back the next day! I went for dinner then went again for lunch the next day! Also, they have kids menu! It's not on the website and I thought I'll share this since I have a toddler and I was worried about what he would eat. Once I saw the kid's menu, I was relieved!

Despite the restaurant being so busy, the food came out fast and piping hot. I was really impressed with this! Another thing I was impressed with was that our table ordered 4 fish entree's and all four fish were cooked perfectly. None of them were overcooked even by a bit. This tells me the restaurant really cares about the quality of their food and has a process in place to ensure it is successful. Good job!!

Artic Char: The fish was cooked beautifully. The skin was crispy and the fish was very juicy. I was nervous about eating overcooked fish. I had the balsamic glazed carrots and the grilled asparagus as my sides. The carrots were cooked unevenly. Some were soft and some felt like they should be cooked longer. The asparagus could've been prepared differently where the ends should've been removed. Not a big deal but it wasn't pleasant to eat. After all, the star of the dish is the fish and it was fantastic.

Halibut: The fish was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Slicing the fish down with a fork, it just comes right off. Very fresh and juicy.

Fried oysters: Oysters were plump, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Perfection!

House made cornbread: This came warm! Very soft and moist. So good!

Fish and chips: The fish was very crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside! Exactly how I wanted it! However, after a few bites, it was getting a bit too salty for my taste. I ended up finishing it because the texture was just to die for. And the fries that came with it, excellent!

Jumbo lump crab cake: A bit disappointed on this one since it was advertised as jumbo lump crab cake. I saw a few jumbo lump pieces but it was mostly mixed with smaller pieces of crab meat. I had crab cakes that were really made of all jumbo lump crab meat. So I wouldn't recommend the crab cake here.

Service: I felt that the service could've been better. They were friendly but there were things that were not provided that I thought were pretty basic. For example, appetizers came but no plates were provided. This happened both at dinner and lunch. I had a toddler with me but no kids menu was given. I asked for one, it came. But no crayons were given even though the menu was for coloring. I didn't want to deal with a fussy and hungry toddler and trying to flag down a server. My dad went up to the host to get some instead. At the end of the meal, I asked for a box to pack the remaining food but wasn't asked if I needed anything else like the check. Usually packing food means we're done but no question was asked nor was a check provided until after sitting awhile then someone came to ask if we needed anything else. Another thing was I felt that our server stopped smiling after we ordered our drinks which were mostly water. This place is a Jewel in the National Harbor area for Oyster Lovers! I've visited the National Harbor on numerous occasions and failed to visit this restaurant listening to everyone tell me negative experiences.Let me be the one to give you a real review of my Sunday Night after the Redskins game for dinner. The area was decorated for the holidays and the crowds were definitely out for it to be a Sunday. I needed something to bring my mood from the game to something really good to eat. Listen, my first thought was I wouldn't get a table from the looks of the restaurant being completely full. I mean the bar was standing room only and the restaurant was full. I asked about seating and it was my luck something opened just as I walked inside. They originally sat me at a table in the walkway between the bar and restaurant which was a challenge. So many people were coming into the bar area waiting on tables and ordering drinks. This caused a standstill with people right behind me as I was ordering my drink, appetizer and meal. My waitress was Annissa, who immediately suggested to move one table over after telling me about the drink specials and what was good on the menu. She suggested the Lobster Roll, Scallops and Raw Oysters as the best in the area. This had me thinking she wasn't from Maryland. I was correct as she was from Virginia. I asked about the crab cakes and she advised that she didn't want to challenge my knowledge of what's good. I ordered a cocktail, Raw Oysters and the Lobster Roll to start. Listen, the Oysters were GOOD and I mean I had to order a second round just to ensure I wasn't recovering from the drinks earlier at the game. Yes, they were on point and i thought about round three until the lobster roll came to the table. Wow, I was impressed and it was a really good lobster roll. I was able to substitute the sides from fries to a assortment of vegetables. Annissa had me All In and I went for the scallops right after the lobster roll. For once in my life I was ordering food even when I wasn't hungry any more as the food was really good. Now, I was at least two drinks in and order a Moscow Mule with Tito's Vodka to cap the evening. Then Annissa came back asking about desert. Come on, I almost ordered that too. and decided to hold on for my next visit soon. I know you hear a lot about this place or that place being good for seafood. I'm sharing with you that the Raw Oysters and on point and the Lobster Roll and Scallops all were something to take the trip to Walrus @ National Harbor. I've had some good seafood in the area and this is one of the Best! I compare this to Phuket, Thailand in May 2019. This is when I had the same level of freshness and the staff was very professional, This has now become one of my favorite places to visit and I'm visiting soon for Happy Hour. Unfortunately customer service was horrible. We spent the day at the harbor and decided to eat a late lunch here which we regretted. The waitress (nia?) barely came to our table and when she did she did not seem like she cared about anything. Not sure if she was having a bad day or was the rush of the day but when we come for what looks to be good food we expect the service to be at least semi decent. When kids drinks were brought one was forgotten and of course little people aren’t patient and didn’t understand why other kids had drinks and not him. Waitress eventually came back just to quickly drop off one of the drinks from the bar(only one-the other was forgotten and the beer did not come until we were almost finished) and i was able to ask for the other kids soda. She came back to quickly drop the soda off and disappeared again. I did not hear her ask once if anyone needed anything or if everything was okay. When food came out my meal was forgotten entirely so I sat while everyone else ate and it did not come out until all the kids were finished already and adults were nearing the end of their meal. No apologies for the missing food. I feel like the only time waitress came to check on us was when we were all finished eating and she asked if we were done, we said yes, and figured she would be back with our check. No :( we sat around waiting a long time and my 9yr old even fell asleep at the table because we just sat for so long. Eventually One of our party went up to a gentleman in a suit to express concerns because our waitress was in the corner socializing while we just sat with empty plates waiting to pay and leave. This gentleman walked by our table with an angry look on his face and came back with our check a few minutes later. No attempt by anyone to make anything right. Our waitress never came back to the table after that. Another gentleman by the door asked if the gentleman in the suit took care of us, which we replied he brought our check. That was it. He had an astonished face that there was no attempt to make things right. But we had paid and could not wait to leave at that point. Which is very sad because I feel like we would have enjoyed the food more had service been better.
