Have been here a handful of times on dates and itimate dinners with the wife and exes. Doe's is a bit of a legend in the area for its massive, buttery, tender, beautifully cooked steaks and tamales with chili.
I haven't once had a bad waitress or waitstaff experience. They are usually all very professional but friendly enough to chat a moment or tell a joke.
The first few times I came to the establishment, I was vegetarian and enjoyed the large platter of spaghetti that was served.
The times since post vegetatianism. I have enjoyed to the highest level the steaks, tamales and chili they are famous for. Though admittedly, the tamales were just a touch dry but not terribly. Took my wife once after a trip the grocery store and her asking me what I thought would be the "best steak in the area" (she had been let down by 3 seperate restaurants recently of her steak being over cooked or undercooked to . . . Large degrees.) So next night, I made reservations and took her for a date night dinner. She looked at the menu and "asked if we could afford it" (there is a bit of sticker shock in when you see some of the prices meant for two people but they are not at all unreasonable for what they are.) We decided on an appetizer of three tamales (she can be a bit of a picky eater and didn't wish to order more in the event she didn't enjoy them.) the 2 lb porterhouse which comes with two house salads and a side for each person.
Long story short, once the steak was laid before us, her eyes widened in disbelief of a piece of meat so large. The steak was beautifully seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium as we ordered it. She loved the tamales and her not believing we would have enough to eat (we are both a bit on the hefty side and hadn't eaten that day from being busy). Had leftovers for the next meal.
The atmosphere is always lovely with them displaying art from the local talented artist (being smack dab in the middle of the art district, this makes sense and is always pleasant to see). Overall, it was a well-deserved 5 out of 5 from the both of us. We have been back since that night and will likely come many a more date/ anniversary nights.
P.S. Miss the signed playing cards that used to be taped to the ceiling many years ago. Was a memory I used to...

Pros: service was great, gentleman was incredibly respectful and quick, when an order was wrong he sincerely apologized and didn't blame someone else (even though he's not the one cooking the food. I always feel bad for servers taking the rap for the food). Server made up for it with a slice of carrot cake. -my ribeye was perfect. -salads are delicious -ranch is homemade and it shows. Yum!
Cons: Everything in saying is because of the price you pay for the food: the atmosphere is crap. Pictures crooked on the walls, and it feels more like a dive bar than a place you're spending $60+ on a steak. my husband's chicken marinara was cold. -my friends lobster was overcooked -my friends ribeye was overcooked -my friends mahimahi was overcooked -my friend has Lyme disease and can't have meat. He asked if there was meat in the marinara, and was told they cam do it without meat. There was meat. This is a health issue, and the kitchen should have made sure. The server put in the ticket no meat. garlic bread never showed up. Butter and sour cream come in packets, not in ramekins.
Conclusion: Atmosphere and kitchen staff
as a former restaurant employee/ server, idk what this restaurant is trying to do. Are you a dive bar or an expensive restaurant? According to the menu, if you're going to be heavily priced, your atmosphere should reflect that. Mainly-- your kitchen NEEDS to make sure that every plate, not just the steaks, is up to satisfaction. No one wants to pay $60 for rubbery lobster, a well done ribeye when she asked for pink, and $30+ for cold pasta, or go to the hospital because you can't read a simple ticket of NO MEAT. We left very upset but did not want to dump that on our poor server. He did his job. If a manager walked around to make sure everything was great, I wouldn't be posting this. Everyone else...
Read moreHeard amazing things about this place but was severely disappointed. The atmosphere was not what you would expect for a steakhouse. Felt more like a back alley bar with the servers wearing hoodies and 90s alternative playing on the single speaker for the entire restaurant. The floor was filthy with food all over. The lighting was so dark we could hardly read our menus.
The service was friendly and quick to bring our drinks and food. no complaints there!
Got the blackberry bourbon drink which tasted like kool-aid with a splash of whiskey.
The food… Salad was chopped up ice berg with a few red onions and chopped tomatoes (our waitress asked us if we wanted tomato and onion… if we said no I guess we would have just gotten lettuce??). up charge for bacon bits and shredded cheese. We ordered the house dressing which was oil/vinegar but tasted like the plastic container it was served in. Fresh cracked Pepper was a nice touch! Served with a basket of packaged crackers?? Don’t really understand that. My husband ordered a medium rare steak which was still cold in the middle and extremely rare. It was a great cut of steak but had no flavor and looked like it was smothered in gravy. The baked potato had no flavor with packaged sour cream and butter I ordered shrimp and vegetables which was very bland and tiny portion sizes smothered in some form of tasteless grease. The bread was a 1/4” piece of sourdough with no butter or oil for topping.
We spent $120 and left feeling very disappointed (and still hungry). Previous reviews do not reflect at all what we experienced. I’m glad it was only my husband and I and not family from...
