I grew up eating Jersey Mike's when it was just a humble, local sub shop at the Jersey Shore. Among the things that have impressed me the most is that they've been able to grow so large and yet retain the quality and flavor of the subs I remember growing up with. And that goes for wherever I have had Jersey Mike's - whether in Jersey, or as far away as Southern California or Florida. It's kinda weird, actually.
I only have a couple of gripes.
The first is that they've trimmed down their menu from the large selection I grew up with. I miss all the classic subs that used to be on offer, though I understand the need to simplify the menu with all of the company's expansion.
Second, and the one that really makes me crazy, is that they have coined the standard dressing of a sub as "Mike's way." Everywhere Ive ever lived in the NJ, PA or New England... And whether you called it a sub, a hoagie or a grinder... You would normally ask for "everything" on it. That means you get it topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and oregano. Or as they now call it here - Mike's Way. Look, I get it - it's a gimmick, and one that works for name recognition and for folks who didn't grow up in the northeast. But for those who are familiar, it's kinduvan insult to the thousands of other mom and pop shops who have always topped sandwiches this way for generations. It's a strange concept to try and own.
Okay, rant over.
Despite that particular critique, I still love Jersey Mike's. It's nice to find a good sub if I have the hankering, especially when I'm traveling abroad and I want to feel at home - It's always nice to walk in and see the old pictures of Point Pleasant hanging on the walls, even if the kids making my sandwich have no idea where that...
Read moreFood, service, and atmosphere is great. My reason for 4 stars is this: I request that the sub rolls for my cold subs NOT be cut all the way thru before placing the ingredients inside. I prefer having the “hinge” on the back to keep the toppings from falling out. However…they refuse to accommodate. They’ve told me everything from they get in trouble if they do it that way, or they’re not allowed to do it that way, or the most recent it’s corporate policy that they cut their sub rolls all the way through for cold subs. For the amount I’m paying for their subs (which is worth it), you’d think they would accommodate the customer. Any other Jersey Mike’s I happen to go to when I’m in to their area, gladly fulfill my request WITHOUT question. But since North Lake is only about a mile from me, this is my homebase Jersey Mike’s. I have correspondence from Corporate Jersey Mike’s (email and verbal), that say it is up to the individual franchisee to make that decision, not Corporate. So I don’t understand why they are so adamant at this location about NOT butterflying (that’s what it’s called), their cold subs when requested. I even had one employee at the Northlake location tell me he got “reamed” out once by the manager for butterflying a sub for a customer. It seems as though since I am the paying customer, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. Especially when I’m dropping 20, 30, and $40 per visit, especially for their their Giant subs, you would think they would be a bit more accommodating. Otherwise, Jersey Mike’s on Northlake Boulevard is absolutely fantastic. I just wish they’d remember, it is also the little things that keep a customer. happy and...
Read moreDelivery driver review: I've picked up here about 5 times I think. About 3 times it was good - order either ready when I arrived or within a few minutes. They put orders out on a shelf and allow you to take them on your own and typically check with you when walk up to look for an order. All that's great.
However 2 times, I closing the last time I waited a good 20 minutes for a small order (with the order being place by customer 10 minutes earlier). While I waited I watched several customers come in behind me, place orders and leave with them before mine was completed.
Restaurants sometimes feel as though the customers that happen to be in the store are somehow better or more important than the delivery customers and their drivers. Apparently this place thinks so. Proceed...
