Sabor Latino
If you love Latin food, you'll love Sabor Latino! When I first ate there some years ago, the restaurant was cute and cozy, and had the most amazing paintings of rural family life in South America on the wall. And the food and service were top-rate!
My friends introduced me to Bandeja Paisa ($22.99), a traditional Colombian dish that features a grilled sirloin steak, fried pork belly (chicharrón), Colombian chorizo, an egg cooked over medium, rice, beans, an arepa and plantains. So good! I wouldn't say I get this every time I go - but it's a great (and frequent) choice, and the portions are so generous, I have enough for one or two meals the next day.
There are combination dinners including fajitas ($22.99 and $23.99) and paella ($24.99). Appetizers include my favorite, empanadas (2 for $6.00), as well as tostones ($8.99-$16.99), nachos, tacos and more.
They have four offerings of ceviche ($21.99-$22.99); churrasco (grilled beef) and rib eye steaks, ropa vieja (Spanish stewed beef), and more delicious beef dinners. Of course there are delicious - and traditional - chicken, pork and seafood dinners, as well.
They have an excellent bar, and I enjoy trying their different drinks, like coconut mojitos and mango margaritas. There's a large and nice selection of beers, wines and liquors.
Even if you don't drink alcohol, they have a great selection of natural juices and Central American beverages, like horchata, which is a delicious preparation with rice, vanilla and cinnamon ($4.00-$5.00).
And not to be missed are their coffees: café con leche, café fria, cortadito, capuccino, espresso and more. And why not add a coffee cocktail, like a B-52 (espresso, Grand Manier, Baileys, Kahlúa and steamed milk). Or a Toasted Almond (espresso, Frangelico, Amaretto, Baileys, Kahlúa and steamed milk). So good!
I've ever had enough room for any of the desserts at El Sabor, but they look fabulous! Flan, chocolate lava cake, tres leches (three mills cake - a combination of evaporated, condensed and whole milk with whipped cream), coconut gelato and more.
Now that this popular restaurant has expanded to take up the southwest corner of the little mall (the Joseph's and Home Goods plaza at Northlake Boulevard and Military Trail) the rustic decor is gone in favor of a sleek, contemporary look. There are more - and huge - TV screens, perfect for watching and cheering on your favorite soccer team. And much more to recommend this consistently good and enjoyable restaurant.
No worries if you don't speak Spanish or are unfamiliar with the foods of Spain and Latin America. The staff is friendly and bi-lingual, and can help you make selections beyond the familiar tacos, burritos, quesadillas and Cuban sandwiches. Do give Sabor Latino a try -...
Read moreDisappointing. The restaurant is very new and renovated and looks beautiful. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end.
The lunch menu was very limited and small compared to the dinner menu, along with some items mislabeled (chicken was stated as breaded but came out grilled), and the pricing for soft drinks and appetizers was incredibly high. Additionally alot of the items that came out just fell flat when it came to taste and especially portion size.
My biggest issue came from the service. At the start it was perfectly fine, but took a nosedive the second the food came out. Our waitress took our orders without issue, with the exception of not knowing what Mountain Dew was despite the restaurant serving Pepsi products, but after the food came to the table, we did not see our waitress for about 60 minutes. We never got our drinks refilled, she never came by to ask if everything came out right, and the only person to come to our table was other servers attempting to deliver us food that other tables ordered (this happened 4 times, I kid you not).
After waiting 30+ minutes for a refill or our checks, we had to get her ourselves and finally got the bill, which she still never offered to get us refills despite 4/5 of the glasses on the table being completely empty of even ice, let alone drinks.
It honestly is such a disappointment due to how competitive lunch places are in that plaza and how high our expectations were walking into this beautiful restaurant. We would love to give it another shot, but it is unlikely we will return due to the poor service and mediocre tasting dishes, especially when we are on a strict lunch hour and can not wait 30 minutes extra for a check to come...
Read moreThis has become one of my favorite restaurants. The menu has lots of signature dishes from Central and South America, and everything is so fresh and yummy. The ajiaco soup from Columbia is my absolute favorite! The bar menu is also really good, with a surprising amount of variety that you wouldn't expect in such a modest restaurant. The prices are very good for all the food and drinks. In so many restaurants these days, you just feel insulted when the bill arrives, but this is never the case at Sabor Latino! Also, the staff and servers are all bilingual, speaking Spanish and English, and they all have that kind of humble sweetness that is so typical of Latin Americans. It's really refreshing in this day and age! Kary was my server last night, and she was simply lovely. The atmosphere is simple and modest, but very clean. There are some large painted murals hanging, depicting some Central American folks preparing food for an outdoor feast. It's a casual atmosphere, and I often see lots of families dining here. I have also noticed that many of the customers are Spanish speakers, which is probably a good indication that the food is approved by them! You can either sit at a booth or at the bar, which is not very long. I have also ordered take-out on a few occasions and have been very pleased. ¡Disfruta! PS. The day after Hurricane Irma, Sabor Latino was the only restaurant opened for business. Everyone who endured the storm was stressed out, but the staff at Sabor Latino was just as...
