The Cheese Curds appetizer was above average.
The Guinness Beef Boxty had fewer than ten peas, no carrots, and no discernible onions (as they may have been chopped fine and rendered translucent). The Irish cabbage side was very good. The presentation was well executed.
The Shepards Pie was also presented artfully. However, beneath the mashed potato stratum it was mostly more potatoes. I remember seeing three pieces of carrot. I don't know what other root vegetables I was meant to encounter. It was not obvious I encountered more than those three carrot pieces. I didn't expect the lamb to be as processed as much as it was, and its flavor was subdued. I could tell it was lamb, but barely. The bread was basic and somewhat dry.
Without having the benefit of a menu in hand, or a full verbal description of the dessert item, the server asked if we wanted bread pudding, explaining that the peanut butter pie wasn't available. Assuming on my part it was bread pudding, being unusual only in its grand size as described by the server, we ordered the bread pudding. It was essentially a bread pudding sundae with caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream. Firstly, that's ridiculous. Secondly, if I had known it was going to be such a carnival show, and that I could request that the bread pudding be served in its natural state, I would have. The chocolate just tasted bitter against the uniquely spiced pudding. The whipped and ice creams added nothing interesting to the experience. Even if I knew to request the removal of said puerile condiments, they are still built into the price. In the end, I enjoyed what I ate from the center of the pudding and abandoned the remainder.
The service overall was excellent. The atmosphere was pleasant and the decor was great. The food portion sizes were reasonable, as were the prices for those sizes. The details above are what led to the...
Read moreWe are from out of town and after catching a late afternoon movie, I was in the mood for something different for dinner. I read the reviews for House of Henry and decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is definitely Irish Pub, and it is probably more pub than restaurant, but I loved the atmosphere and ended up enjoying the food. The cozy booths with drapes gave the place an old world charm and help shield diners from too much noise. It was nice getting to enjoy a normal dinner conversation without having to speak loudly to offset the ambient noise. We ordered drinks and the Cheese Curds which were very flavorful, especially with the ranch dipping sauce. For entrees, my wife chose mashed potatoes and cabbage - typical Irish fare (and probably because she is slowly becoming one of "those" vegetarians, eschewing all matter of animal protein). I chose Fish and Chips after vascilating between that and the Pork Schnitzel. The fish (mahi) and chips were hot, fresh and flavorful. The chips were crisp, thin planks of potatoes, unlike any chips I've had before. And they were so good. My wife was not happy with her entree choices (who would be) stating that the potatoes had an odd taste and the quarter head of cabbage was not done enough for her liking. She did order Peanut Butter Cheesecake to go for a late night snack. Would I visit HoH again? I surely would, but I would probably try the schnitzel since so many other reviewers have suggested it. If you enjoy the Irish pub atmosphere, live music, good food and friendly staff, give HoH a try the next time you're in downtown...
Read moreSoooo disappointed!! My husband and I went to have lunch. We order a Killian's red beer. Nope, they serve Anheuser-Busch red ale, that was pretty flat. Thought we were at an Irish pub but whatever. They have a contact less menu so I had to read the menu off my phone. The menu up on the screen was too small to see. Anytime I get a chance to order a Reuben that is what I order. I didn't pay too much attention to what was on it because a Reuben is a Reuben. Usually my only concern is that the meat is sliced thin. My order arrives and the bread is hard and black. It has this huge black spot on it, it was the marbling on the bread. I try to take a bite and it is so hard, I look at it and turn it over and the other side is even worse. When it arrived I wondered what kind of bread it was. The waitress should know better and never should have even brought it out. I return it and was given a new sandwich that looked nothing like the other one. The bread was much lighter but the cheese wasn't even melted. As if all this isn't enough, I take a bite and there is no sauerkraut, it has red cabbage. Ugh, by then I'm just done. The potato salad was pretty bland too. We get our bill and you can pay from your phone. We have never done this before. I asked my husband if he left a tip and he said he didn't notice it. So he left her a $10 bill. I'm all for leaving something because they are just trying to make a living. I get the bill by email and we left her a $7.64 tip. So all in all we left a $17.64 tip on a $35.70 tab for a very...
