I visited Cafe Grand Lux on a Sunday afternoon, and the place was moderately crowded. Unfortunately, the AC was broken, so the temperature inside was in the mid-70s. However, we found a more comfortable spot away from the direct sunlight. The interior was very classy, spacious, and clean, perfectly matching the "Grand Lux" name.
Our waiter, Connor, was awesome. He was really friendly, answered every question we had, and gave us great suggestions on drinks and menu items.
We started with drinks and ordered the Sidecar, Mango Mule, Calypso Mojito, Tahitian Pineapple, Strawberry Greyhound, and the Lux Old Fashioned. Most of the drinks were good to great, with the Tahitian Pineapple and the Sidecar being the standouts. An honorable mention goes to the Lux Old Fashioned and Mango Mule. The worst drink easily was the Strawberry Greyhound, which was way too syrupy sweet. I returned it for another Mango Mule for my sister.
For appetizers, we got the Grand Fried Calamari, Lemon Parmesan Brussels Sprouts, and Pot Stickers. The calamari was pretty good but nothing special. It had a lot of fried zucchini and onion instead of actual seafood, which was a bit disappointing, but it had a great crisp to it. The Lemon Parmesan Brussels sprouts were actually pretty good, even though I don't usually go for sprouts. If all Brussels sprouts tasted this good, I'd eat them every day. Definitely recommend this to sprout fans. The pot stickers were good as well, nothing amazing, but they hit all the expected notes.
I was the only one to get an entrée and chose the Cafe Beef Wellington, expecting a traditional beef Wellington. What I got instead was a deconstructed version with a cube of filet mignon topped with a hat of flaky pastry. This presentation was disappointing, but the filet mignon was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and seasoned very well.
To finish off the meal, we got two desserts: the freshly made New Orleans Beignets and the "Best" Carrot Cake. They call it the "Best," but I call it "OK." It wasn't anything to write home about or crave specifically from this place. The beignets, on the other hand, were a star, freshly made and piping warm. They tasted delectable on their own, but with the sauces, they were elevated to another level. I definitely recommend the beignets.
Overall, the experience was pretty good. The drinks were terrific for the most part, the appetizers were okay, and the entrée was decent. I'd come back specifically for the drinks...
Read moreI recently visited this location with my boyfriend and our friends for dinner while I was in town visiting my boyfriend and his family. After being sat down, we waited over fifteen minutes for our waitress to introduce herself. At first we didn’t mind as it gave everyone time to catch up with one another, but it later became indicative of the poor experience we would have. The service we received was quite fragmented. Drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, we’re brought to our table at various times. Even though the drinks were all ordered at the same time, a glass of sangria would be brought to the table, followed by a few soft drinks, followed by another glass of sangria, and later the remaining soft drinks; however, this only happened after repeated reminders of what was still missing. Only half of our appetizers were brought to the table without having to prompt the waitress again that food was still missing, resulting in the items having to be reordered. When our meals were finally brought to the table, most of them were made improperly or were unappetizing. The short rib in my Sunday Night Pasta was fatty and chewy, making the pieces of meat inedible. The two Avocado-Chipotle Cheeseburgers were brought to the table without chipotle mayonnaise. When the mayonnaise was requested and brought to the table, the hamburgers were then noticed to be cooked incorrectly. The cheeseburger that was supposed to be well done was medium and the cheeseburger that was supposed to be medium was well done. As additional modifications had been made to one of the hamburgers (grilled onions were added) the hamburgers could not be switched. The Burger Melt that was ordered well done was rare and the Shrimp Scampi was sour tasting and inedible. The waitress was notified of our complaints and, rather than offering anything in exchange, removed the food from the table and apologized. We were presented with the check which we paid and asked to speak with a manager prior to leaving. We were told that a manager would be with us shortly, but after waiting ten minutes we left. I’ve dined at Grand Lux previously and have always had a wonderful experience. This most recent experience was not the same and was quite disappointing only made worse by the $180 bill for food that could not be...
Read moreThey claimed it was like a Cheesecake Factory, but they have BIG shoes to fill.
First mistake, our server was really polite but at the same super talkative, which on one side is good but not for the other tables waiting on him.
Second mistake, I ordered a Cesar salad and it came with old brown lettuce which the server blamed the "new kitchen crew" saying they throw everything and don't double check. (What a great way of selling your brand and being a team sport, but nvm).
Third mistake, they literally took forever to bring a SALAD (no protein or anything extra). By the time they brought it back, my boyfriend had already finished his food, my side of fries were already cold and the server vanished.
About the food: The "steak" they sell is a meatloaf with the shape of the steak and they are covered with the mashed potatoes to hide that "little" detail.
My Cesar salad had 2 super hard pieces of thin bread and they called that "croutons".
The side of fries is almost $6 and they are soooooo much for just a side and yes I know, who would complain of too much food, right?, Well if the fries taste like old and refried in old oil you would complain of the size and price.
They also sell lemonade. I ordered the cucumber one and the server mentioned it was too sweet but I could reduce the sweetness with the water he brought me (so now I have to become a barista for myself?)
The only reason I kept 2 stars was the attention but not for my server but for the manager that came to fix the whole dilemma and took a few minutes to solve it and was super polite and not at all upset or nasty. She was the best for sure.
I'm sorry but this was the first and last time for me.
The Cheesecake Factory is waaaaay better. Their cesar salad is 10/10. Their steak is steak. And prices are cheaper.
About Price: $38 dollars and they took away the price of the salad.
Meatloaf was $24 Lemonade $5 Fries $6 The rest...
