I was so excited when this place finally opened. We live a few blocks away and gave it several months after opening to try it out. We know it takes time to make sure things go smoothly. Overall Score: Absolutely no. We tried so hard to give it every chance, but they failed at every turn (except the bussing staff who were on top of every table)
Food: 3/10 We had the fried pickles appetizer, it was woefully under battered and the proportion of pickles to batter made it inedible. As an entrée we had a bowl or tomato bisque soup (pretty decent, I would order it again), a small side salad (which was input as a Black Haus Salad) that neither of us even bothered trying because it was revolting. As an entrée, we shared the Cuban sandwich with French fries. It was barely OK. The bread was soggy and the meat was cold (we waited an hour for our food even though it wasn't busy) and the flavor was bland even with the aggressive mustard on the bread.
Service: 2/10 We were seated at 5:15pm on a Friday night. We sat for 15 minutes before our server realized he has us as a table. He was "a friend of the owner, and only works a few shifts here and there" and essentially ignored us the entire time. He took our drink and appetizer order and then realized after we flagged down a different server to tell them we didn't like the appetizer, he came and took our order (never did anything about the horrible appetizer). We didn't get our dinner until 6:25pm. Over an hour after we were seated. He ignored the salad we didn't even touch, and didn't once check in while we were eating. We left 2/3 of the shared entrée, all of the salad and 70% of the fried pickles... very obvious that we didn't enjoy any of the food. Not once did our server or any one else who came to the table to clear dishes acknowledge our obvious dislike of the food. Added to the fact tables that were sat after we placed our food order got their food before us was infuriating. We were never even asked about a single course.
Not once did our server check in with us and the other serving staff clearing our dishes (full of food we didn't eat) acknowledge our obvious dissatisfaction. The whole experience was so disappointing.
We are die hard local business supporters and were excited for this place to open, but our experience ensures that we won't be back and we will be sure to tell our neighbors to steer clear of the over priced food and...
Read moreIt’d been a long week of work and parenting. My wife and I wanted to enjoy a Sunday afternoon to ourselves. We’d looked around on OpenTable for somewhere local to try.
The pictures for BlackHaus were intriguing enough for us to try it out. Luckily, we were able to reserve a table for the evening.
It wasn’t busy when we got there so we were able to get right in.
Once seated and scanning the menu, we decided on our drinks. Pomegranate Cider and an Old Fashioned. The waiter let me know that the smoke smell that was in the air was from the bar and they could smoke my Old Fashioned if I wanted. I’d never had a smoked drink, so I gladly accepted the offer.
Both drinks were good. The smoke in the Old Fashioned added another level of complexity to an already great drink.
Our starter of polenta fries came out next. What a delicious way to start the meal. Nice and tasty, with just the right amount of crunch on the outside. The bacon jam and garlic chimichurri included with the fries; I COULD DRINK CUPS OF THEM. Not sure if they’re made on site or it’s purchased but I’d never had them.
Dinner was the filet and Scotch salmon pasta. The steak was cooked perfectly to the temp my wife asked for. Perfectly seasoned with just some salt and pepper. It also came with chimichurri. Her side of crispy cauliflower was pretty flipping tasty too. I wanted to take that from her. 😊
My pasta was yum too. When I scooped it up, at first, I thought that it wouldn’t be because I’m used to thicker sauces. I was wrong. The sauce had so many different layers of flavor to it.
My wife doesn’t really like salmon. As a testament to how good it was, she was stealing the fish out of my plate.
To finish the night off, I ordered another drink. An apple crisp. It’s the only thing I wasn’t a fan of that we tried. It tasted good; it was more of a textural issue. Apple pieces weren’t great in a cold beverage. That drink feels like something that might taste better hot in a mug.
It was a good night, at a good restaurant with a good waiter, with my great wife, taking a break from our OK kids. We’d visit again.
I have now been looking up recipes and devices to add smoke to my...
Read moreWe ate lunch here over the weekend during some typical gorgeous "fall weather" that we have in Colorado. 60 degrees was perfect patio weather! We were sat at a table facing Mainstreet, which was exactly where we wanted to be. The table had been cleaned and sanitized, and they even had mini bottles of Germx hand sanitizer on the each tables for the guests to use. We ordered $5 Bloody Mary's (I got a virgin one since I don't drink) with extra green olives and it was DELICIOUS! I had been eyeballing the blistered Shishito Peppers since first seeing their menu online and couldn't wait to try them. They were perfectly cooked, tender but a little crunch with the best aioli sauce drizzled over the top. The fun thing about shishito peppers is that only 1 in 20 are spicy, so it's kind of a gamble if you're going to get one or not. The husband and I each ordered a burger for lunch... I got the basic Cheeseburger with cheddar cheese and Nick got the Black + Haus burger. Both of them were perfectly cooked, juicy and had that amazing crispy crunchy flame grilled-char-broiled (whatever you want to call it) kind of burger magic going on. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned as well. Chef Kurt knows how to cook a burger! You could tell that this menu and restaurant were being orchestrated by industry veterans that know exactly what they're doing. Especially since they've been open for less than 2 weeks! Our server was attentive, friendly and quick to check in with us. I cannot wait to go back, order out, eat more shishito peppers and am so excited to see what these guys can do when they can open up and fully thrive when the pandemic restrictions are lifted. Speaking of which, everyone was respectfully distanced, wearing masks, sanitizing and cleaning and we felt 100% comfortable dining with them. I am excited to try their rotating soups on cold days, their cuban sandwich and that creamy avocado pasta.... or the roasted half chicken!! Great job and 5 stars again and again! P.S. The only photo I took was of my virgin bloody mary! The food looked so good that we ate it before even considering...
