July 2024 == Oh dear. This feels like a yo yo! Today's visit was a disappointment. While the Vegetarian Sushi platter was just as good as before, everything else was substandard. The hot and sour soup was just beef flavored broth with no heat or sourness. The Ma La Chicken was salty; The Hunan beef was so salty we almost sent it back; and the string beans had no flavor at all. Not sure why this places goes through such swings, but it will be a long time before we come back.
July 2023 == Time for a significant update and upgrade. It's been years since my last visit, and while the staff is the same (I recognized a couple of the servers!) the food has certainly gone through upgrades. Maybe we ordered better choices?
We decided to try the vegetarian sushi platter and it was a gorgeous combination of five different rolls presented in a pretty manner on a grey plate that complemented the vibrant colors of the rolls (see attached pictures). The salad that came with it was the standard one you get at all Sushi and Hibachi ones with the standard ginger-based sauce. However, the miso soup was really good. It was NOT the clear broth that is mostly salt - in this one you could really taste the seaweed and see the cloudiness - also, lots of pieces of Tofu.
The Chinese dishes that we tried included the Hot and Sour soup - which unfortunately was neither (Chili Oil helped on the hot side). For the entree we ordered the Portabello Mushroom in House sauce and it was rich, flavorful, and yummy. Served beautifully and on top of brown rice (small upcharge for the rice) and it was really tasty.
The whole meal was relatively inexpensive - especially since almost half of it came home with us as leftovers!
This place must be suffering from an identity crisis. They have the standard Chinese menu items. It is supplemented with a standard Sushi menu. But then they sprinkled in some Thai dishes as well. While the variety is great, it unfortunately also means that nothing is done particularly well.
The place is well decorated and kept although the staff seemed a little confysed during my visit. It did not help that they wanted to rush me through. While i was reading through the menu, they came by three times to see if i was ready to order.
Once ordered, the food came out in very quick order. Kitchen must have been just sitting and waiting! Unfortunately, they got my order wrong in their haste.
Side note - why the rush? The place was half empty???
I asked for extra spicy on a dish that was supposed to be spicy, so it came out mild and sweet. Sigh. decent flavor, not not what was advertised.
Prices are not expensive and in line with others...
Read moreDo you like General Tso's chicken? If so, move along to another Chinese restaurant. We went to this place only 15 mins after they opened to enchant ourselves on their buffet, and despite there only being 6 other people in the restaurant, they had run out of General Tso's, lo mein and egg rolls. As the restaurant filled, crowds gathered around the buffet to discuss the absence of the fabled General Tso's as we waited 25 mins for them to refill it. And when they did, I'm not sure it was chicken that was bathed in that sauce, as the meat inside was as not only dark, it was gray - as in the color of the hair on your grandpa's nether-regions. It tasted like it too - it was more disappointing than the day I realized Santa isn't real. Equally disappointing was the lo mein, as it tasted like making out with my 80-year-old chain-smoking aunt - which probably would have been more appetizing than the food in their undersized buffet. The only remotely edible items in the place were the sugar coated donut pieces, so now my stomach is in a state of revolt because my lunch consisted entirely of deep fried dough coated in sugar. Thanks, Bean Curd - or should I say Bean Turd? Also of note was the fact that one of their employees was seated at a table In the middle of the restaurant with about 12 pounds of string beans overflowing on the table as he snapped and prepared them for cooking. Now I'm no food safety inspector, but I'm thinking that preparation of food in the middle of a public dining area is likely a health concern, not to mention a strange choice of decor. Finally, I suggest that if you plan on having something to drink with your meal, you bring it yourself. Once my water was gone, and my waitress having vanished, I was forced to go thirsty until my ice melted into drinkable form - although I had to shove my glass under my armpit to speed up the process. So in summary, the place has poor food, poor service, and questionable food preparation techniques - unless you'd like to gamble with your health, test the limits of your sanity, and sharpen your survival skills searching for water, I recommend treating this place like a gang shooting and...
Read moreLoving Asian food and having read Bean Curd reviews on this and other sites, husband and I entered the restaurant with great expectations.
We started with the house special wonton soup. While not the very best Wor Wonton I've ever had, it was certainly the best I've had since moving to southwest Pennsylvania.
Husband ordered General Tso's Chicken, our standard dish when trying a new Asian restaurant. The sauce was excellent but the chicken was overly browned and the meat dry. I ordered Shrimp and Vegetables in brown sauce. The shrimp and veggies were perfectly cook but even Husband agreed that the brown sauce was excessively "salty".
We were cheerfully greeted and promptly seated. Beverages were on the table within minutes of being seated and the food was served in a very timely manner. A plus is that we had time to enjoy our soup course before the entres arrived.
We would have given Bean Curd's kitchen the benefit of having an off night and returned for a second try however, after a couple bites of the shrimp dish, I experienced severe sneezing, a very itchy rash and burning palms and soles. This is typical of my sensitivity to MSG and symptoms were relieved with a Benadryl capsule. I truly LOVE Chinese food and know that the vast majority of Asian restaurants no longer have MSG in their kitchens, but I carry Benadryl because I've learned that some still use commercially prepared sauces that do...
