The boutique Hotel Petersburg Tapestry was a bit disappointing. The lobby looks nice at first, the nice wide marble steps, but the crown moldings are just painted with metal gold.
Shirley’s
The restaurant was quite full so we went to the adjacent bar. We sat at a small table near the bar and ordered cocktails. The atmosphere was nice and the vintage architecture of the old hotel was visually appealing, except for the metallic gold paint on the molding. I asked for the mocktail ginger mule, but with whiskey. My wife asked for a taste of a draft, but it was flat and so she asked for an old fashioned, it was terrible. We ordered from a brief selection of the basic southern fried dishes, ugh. I got the blackened salmon, and it was a bit too blackened and dry….the salmon was too large portion, filling the plate, with completely blackened and greasy ‘compote’ that was so charred and greasy I couldn’t tell what is was, buried under the fish.I believe a few Brussel sprouts and chunks of apple. My wife got a ‘salad’ that was a cut in half romaine with a few shrimp balanced on top and a spicy aioli sauce, sadly not much effort here. The menu is in need of more healthy options! A real mixed greens salad with darker greens would be a good start! A vegetarian dish please! The salmon option portion could be cut in half and still be generous, then broiled to retain the natural juices.A side of lightly steamed vegetables perhaps a few sweet potatoes slices air fried to complete a...
Read moreCan't say if the food is good here or not. Tried to dine here twice. First time we waited for 15 mins for a waiter to approach us and left. Last Sunday we tried again. Walked in at 5PM and bartender was obviously not glad to see us. Then the strangest thing - she let us walk to the hostess podium and stand there about 2 minutes. Then she said are you all here to eat? We said yes. She said the dining room is not open on Sunday. I replied that your website states it is open from 2PM to 9PM on Sunday. She said yeah, well we had no business on Sunday so we discontinued those hours. We left. Hilton, do better. The service attitude is rude. Also, how hard is it to change your website info? Ridiculous. Poorly managed. The hotel was empty. Maybe Petersburg can turn the building into another drug rehab facility. This will be another Oyster Society which I predicted would close after dining there. Look Hilton folks, I've traveled the world and stayed at your properties. This one is sad. Take the advice of a former large grocery chain exec who has years in business - cut your losses and close this place or bring in out of town people to run it because it will ruin your reputation. Yocals are impressed by decor and food placed in the middle of large plates. You've got to impress people that have the means to dine there regularly. Not just people going for a...
Read moreWe decided to try Shirley’s for our 36th anniversary this past Tuesday night. I noted on our reservation that we were celebrating this event. First, the venue is really beautiful. We were greeted promptly, but the server didn’t ask if we were celebrating anything. Finer establishments should always ask. Second, we ordered the shrimp cocktail appetizer, which was delicious. The server did not come back for nearly 15 minutes because he was only 1 of 2. Two larger groups came in, so our service experience went downhill from there. Our entrees came and were delicious (smash burger, fried green tomato and the composed little salad). But no one ever came back to check on our drinks or the meal. We were there for about 90 minutes. Not sure we will go again. Waitstaff needs training and there need to be more of them. If you don’t have enough waitstaff, the manager needs to be out there helping and checking on patrons. This could be a really nice dining experience, but it needs work. Food 4.5....
