The Kid had been pestering me for a year to visit Bao Nine, and during a recent visit to Philadelphia I had to opportunity to discover why! The place was spotless, with very calming (I know, strange, but true) color scheme throughout the property. The window into the kitchen was a nice touch.

The counter staff were courteous and efficient, taking our orders and delivering when ready.

We (The Kid, The Missus (bless 'er) and I) each ordered a combo of three bao comprising of a 'Bao Boa, Sticky Chicky, Bang Bang and the Prime Time. This made sharing a breeze.

The buns were ridiculously fresh and delish! Watching the staff make the dough while we ate didn't hurt our perception of freshness either. Each item was very tasty, and each of us had a favorite: Mine, the Bang Bang; The Kid, The Sticky Chicky; The Missus (bless 'er), the Bao Boa.

We added a side of taro chips, which were a nice crispy counter to the soft textures of the bao. We also ordered a cucumber salad dressing with a slightly spicy mayo-like dressing, and was outstanding. The cukes were crispy, fresh and cooling on the palate (despite the liveliness of the dressing).

All in all, I can guarantee that it won't be a year before we visit Bao Nine again. Definite recommendation for a lunch stop near...

My husband and I came here during my birthday trip to Philly. It's nice to find them so easily via google when looking for local eateries. We ordered their big bao combo (9 baos and 2 sides). Their bao bun was so fluffy! The chicken tasted great, the vegetables were nice and crisp. Each item had its own distinct flavor. My husband and I were super full when we were finished. For the sides we chose the brussel sprouts and the dessert. I love brussel sprouts either way, but these were particularly delicious. I'd totally order just tons of these. We expected to pay 'tourist tax' so the price wasn't outrageous to us but I find locals may question prices. Baos are priced fairly, I feel, but a can of soda was over $3. The service was lovely, very friendly and accommodating. The place was super clean, though we were one of their first two customers of the day as they opened shop today so that may have been why. The atmosphere is nice as well. The food we ordered was prepared quickly without loss to quality. I'm excited to come back next time we're in Philly!

I ordered the “threesome” (which is your choice of 3 buns): The prime time (angus beef), the bao boa (braised short rib) and the lil bao wow (roast pork belly). And wow! They were DELICIOUS! I made no modifications and was a bit hesitant because some of the accoutrements were not things I’d typically eat like green chili sauce. However they were all perfection! Just the right size, good texture and the flavor was divine. For desert I ordered the “big finish” which is deep fried bun sprinkled in cinnamon and sugar. My order didn’t come with glaze sauce (but it should have) so I had to ask for it, which is why I only gave 4 stars for service. The desert was good, but a bit over fried. The lady next to me also ordered the big finish and hers looked properly golden brown, so I may have just gotten a “bad” batch. Still enjoyed them. The glaze, for me, was ehhhh. Tastes like wet powdered sugar, so I enjoyed them sans glaze. Overall, I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re in Philly.
