We were looking for an early dinner spot recently, and we enjoy good Greek food, so we stumbled upon Kostas in Fishtown to give it a try. Menu looked good, so we walked in. It's primarily a bar with pool tables that also serves food. We were there early enough that we basically had the place to ourselves, so we grabbed a high top table with 4 chairs. The bartender was our server, and he did a great job of making us feel welcome, and pointed us to specials, etc... We had the appetizer platter, which is a variety of different dips, pickled veggies & pita bread. For dinners, we tried their meat lover combo (pork skewer, chicken skewer, bifteki skewer, along with some gyro meat), as well as their spanakopita. We also had to try their baklava for dessert. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. It was excellent and well done (particularly the spanakopita, as well as the baklava). The gyro meat was our only disappointment - I was expecting it to be freshly carved off a gyro cone (on a spit), but it was not - it was a processed slice that they can throw on the griddle to re-heat. It's okay, but not as good as the authentic gyro cones. The service was great, and our server came by often to check on us and refill beverages. The owner came by our table to check on us, as well, and we enjoyed a good conversation with him. For us, this worked out really well, and we'll keep it in mind the next time we are in Philly and looking for Greek food. Next time, we'll probably try the outdoor...
Read moreMeh... not impressed. And will not be returning ever again. I would give a list a pro/ cons, but all I have to offer are cons today. Why? Keep on reading below: Walked into this bar/restaurant for happy hour. Or what I assumed was happy hour , as every other establishment around had a happy hour. Walked into the place, and there were only 3 people there. Bartenders completely ignored me until I asked if there was a happy hour or menu. She says “Yeah”, then just stares at me. I ask for the menu, and she rolls her eyes and hands me the normal menu, and doesn’t ever tell me the drink specials either. Confused, I just order a cocktail and a Gyro platter with fries. Cost- over $20 for one 6 oz drink, a child’s serving of fries, and a Gyro with WAY too much garlic! I ask why it costs so much , and she tells me he vodka in my drink is top shelf. Ok, cool, but this is Fishtown, not Center City! My drink should not be over $10 bucks, and taste like water. Also, your pinball machine is broken, you didn’t even bother to tell me about the garden seating out back, AND even when I gave you a small tip for your nonexistent service out of politeness, you were still surly. Think I’ll skip and give the other restaurants in the area my...
Read moreFour of us shared a FEAST last night on the patio (the very dark bar inside didn't appeal for dining). It was a lovely late May night, with perfect temperature for outside dining. The food was all DELICIOUS!!! Moussaka with a beautiful thick layer of bechamel, Horiatiki (Greek salad) just like you get in Greece - with ripe tomatoes, cucumber, nice chunks of tasty feta, kalamata olives, bell pepper...and the dressing comes on the side - which is nice for those who don't like alot of dressing but was so delicious I poured it all on! Spanikopita was AMAZING! we split an appetizer serving and I could've eaten it all myself! Skordalia was loved by everyone at the table (tho I like mine a little creamier - a different type of potato perhaps?). Baba ganoush, fresh & tasty was served with excellent seasoned & lightly oiled (grilled) pita wedges that we couldn't stop eating!
The servings were large and we ended up taking 2 containers of food we couldn't finish....which was delicious for this morning's late breakfast. 💜
I love it when the chef comes out to check on customers...and we got that twice! Very nice gentleman, he obviously cares about what he serves and who he's feeding. Thank you for...
