We stopped at Weckerly's in a desperate attempt to escape the Philly heat and humidity. This summer has been BRUTAL. The dew point has been running it up like a 2006 Kobe Bryant. 35.4 points a game in 2006!? Kids these days could never understand...
We walked into a pretty packed shop, as ice cream is a high dew point's only known weakness. The first flavor I locked in on was "Tomato Strawberry Sorbet w/ Candied Olives." I just stood there staring at it, rereading it. Taking it in. What kind of flavor is that?? Tomato and Strawberry together???
It was the only tub of ice cream that was untouched. Naturally, I had to try a little spoon of it. I wanted to go where no one else from the human race had gone. I felt like Neil Armstrong allegedly stepping foot on the moon.
Before trying, I asked the employee how this flavor even came about. She said "I don't know, our chef just comes up with them and tries them out..." How could I not respect that? Food is such a sneaky creative endeavor. You can really have some fun with it.
As the spoon approached my mouth, I was ready to cringe due to my tastebuds being violated, but it was honestly pretty fire. The light tomato flavor complimented a strong strawberry taste. Two things I would never have thought went together. There's a life lesson in there somewhere.
I ended up just getting vanilla soft serve though, because that's my goto. I'm a simple guy. It was pretty mid, I should have just got a scoop of that tomato strawberry sorbet w/ candied olives but hindsight is always 20/20.

Read moreCan I give more than 5 stars? Where do I begin... I love icecream and anything sweet; cheap, expensive, if it's icecream I will eat it. But now, at Weckerlys, I have found the original ice cream, the very essence of what all ice cream hopes to be.
This is icecream. I am forever changed.
The flavors are so rich and full, every lick is like the first taste, never too cold, never bland. They don't rely on cheap gimmicks added to their icecream to make up for bad quality, each flavor is thoughtfully and specially made, by hand from what I understand, many of which are so special and made in small batches that they're only around for a day or less! The waffle cones are made in house. They're the perfect cone, that which all other cones imitate. The right amount of crunch, never getting soggy, subtle flavor, great thickness (or thinness) and no drips!
Unfortunately I did not have the cookie icecream sandwich, to my everlasting regret, but I can only imagine what it would be like. Rumor has it that the owner is a baker and spent 2 years perfecting the cookies to be thin enough for the sandwich but to still bake evenly. The whole store has so much thought and effort put into it, the quality of Weckerlys is evident through everything they do. I can't wait to come back to Philadelphia just to...
Read moreThis is a review mostly for the Popalong Truck run by Weckerly's, although because my husband and I love the scoop shops so much, that's the main reason we booked the truck for our wedding!
One of our most favorite things in the world is ice cream, and so we knew we wanted to reach out to Weckerly's for their Popalong truck option.
They absolutely delivered.
They were great with communication, pricing, and helping us determine what package would be the best for us.
Our guests could not stop talking about the ice cream and popsicles, and some even got seconds and thirds!!
Some of our favorite photos are of us by the colorful and cute ice cream truck.
They were right on time for when they should arrive at the venue, and the staff member working the event was incredibly friendly.
They were prompt with our emailed questions and very professional and kind. We were super happy with our package options and flavor options, and nothing was last minute with them; they reached out well in advance with when we needed to make these decisions, and were seamless to work with.
So happy that they could be a part of our big day and we'd recommend the Popalong truck to anyone looking to have a fun and unique dessert option for their wedding...
