This is a sourdough bread bakery with a wonderful cafe embedded within. Their bread is excellent. As a whole grain sourdough baker, I'm kinda picky about the bread I eat. Their seeded loaf is a wonderful, substantial, nutty tasting loaf that has inspired me to reintroduce a seeded loaf into my own baking for family and friends. They typically have 8 or so different loaves on offer - all gorgeous - plus baguette, focaccia and a couple kinds of sandwich loaves.
My wife and I may now qualify as regulars in the cafe, typically visiting at least once a week. The kitchen has a nice size menu of well conceived items, all executed with ambition and the skill to back it up.
I can personally recommend the breakfast sandwich, quiche Lorraine, avocado toast and French onion soup. Mushrooms are a nice add to the breakfast sandwich and their cured salmon is a perfect add to the avocado toast. The onion soup is wonderful, with the deep, rich flavor you only get from actually taking the time to caramelize the onions. On a chilly day it's the food equivalent of curling up by the fireplace.
And they have pastries - really, really good ones. This morning I had a pear and ginger muffin that was delightful. It had a texture on the banana bread end of the spectrum with distinct pear and ginger flavor (unlike some things I've encountered elsewhere with undetectable amounts of ginger). Every pastry I've gotten there has been...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeen coming here couple years or so now.. They are so disloyal and rude to repeat local customers. Aside from one employee Mateo.... who is so amazing & professional and does everything & anything for repeat locals.. But she's hidden in the back now.
But 8 out of 10 times thete out of food or bread. And it feels like you're talking to someone used to working at a bank.
And don't ask for a refill... it's makes them angry. They are really nice to young girls though.
I've worked at enough restaurants to know they all handle close to kitchen food production times in 2 ways. They either stop right at the hour posted on there web sites/ inside info signs.
Or they actually start stopping things for about an hour or so before the listed food serving stop times.
And again. Full prices for refills with hostile-esque treatment. Which is don't need for just something simple as going out for iced coffee on a crazy hot day.
Thank you for making a local feel welcome after 2 years or so. But then again the turnover is terrible here.... aside from the rude chick.. and the other good employee Mateo who is in a different position in the back preparing food.
The food is really good though... too bad. I don't need to feel hated enough to come back. That's not what dining out...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've been going to mighty bread regularly ever since I moved to South Philly back in 2020, when they just had a takeout window and a few tables in their courtyard. Seeing this place grow and evolve while still keeping that original fantastic quality has been amazing to see.
Everything here hits. Literally everything. The breads, the sandwiches, soups, salads, toasts, pastries, coffee; it's all phenomenal. Some of my favorites include: The semolina loaves The prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich The beans and pancetta The seasonal polenta The turkey Caesar sandwich (new item!) The tomato pie and focaccia The twice baked almond croissant The orange ricotta teacake The sourdough donuts (rotating, weekend only) Etc, I could go on and on.
And I have to give props to the front of house staff, who are super friendly even when things are really busy.
The cafe has been packed on weekends until the early afternoon, so try to go on weekdays or later in the day to avoid the crowd. It's also nice to get takeout and eat in Columbus Park nearby when the weather is good.
This is the best cafe in the city, it's really...
