Moshulu is a legendary ship over a century old with rich history of sailing the world as a trading vessel to now being an award winning, AAA 4 Diamond rated restaurant nestled in Penns Landing on the Delaware River. If that isn't impressive enough the ambiance and dining experience, including beautiful vistas will surely captivate your senses.
Let's start with the actual venue. The gigantic former sailing vessel has multiple levels of dining and bar space both inside and outdoors, including tented space. The decor shares a bit of classic nautical hardware and tapestry with touches of modern style throughout the vessel. Whether indoors or outside the views are equally beautiful. Whether on a date, family outing (including children) or hosting an event, Moshulu makes a perfect, beautiful venue do to either.
The staff, including the managers, are polite and professional. Throughout my dining experience, I was engaged and catered to. My server had great conversation sharing details of the music scene here in Philly as well as the local events that are typical for 4th of July in Philly.
What attracted me to this restaurant was it's unique venue and the appetizer menu filled with some of my favorite items. The grilled octopus is a must have for me at any restaurant. I love the combination of a charred exterior with soft chewy tenticles. The added touch of spicy cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes with pea & pint puree topped by a harissa citrus vinaigrette were chef's kiss.
The Turkey Meatballs were my second favorite. It is difficult to find a rival tonthe traditional savory Italian Meatball, especially the top-notched ingredient meatballs with lamb, pork and ground beef. This definitely runs neck and neck with it. Instead of a traditional tomato ragu it is topped with a spicy tomato sauce, grana padano and calabrian chillis. The hint of mild spice sets off the flavor in this dish.
The pan roasted muscles were quite tasty and prepared to perfection not overcooking causing the texture to become too chewy. The toasted bread dipped in the curly parsley, garlic and tomato blended olive oil was delightful.
The collossal shrimp coctail, while a simple American staple as far as appetizers go, was unique in that it was offered over a tiny garnishment of mixed greens in a light vinaigrette and a special blended cocktail sauce. Simple yet savory.
The green goddess salad was ample for sharing as well and tasted good. While there is not much dote over when discussing salads, it was a great palate cleanser amidst the well coursed appetizer tasting experience.
The bay scallop ceviche had potential to be much more flavorful than what was presented. It tasted a bit rushed in the process that actually "cooks" the raw ingredients in the acidic ingredients making it a ceviche. I didn't taste the leche de tigre at all. It was missing a kick of lime, perhaps a bit of spice and herb, definitely sea salt to meld the flavors together. Given how well the other dishes were prepared, I am certain an improvement to the ceviche can easily make it a star menu item.
The Pineapple wine was the perfect pairing. It is a nice medium bodied wine, almost like a Chardonnay but with effervescent fruit notes that are not too sweet nor...
Read moreWas celebrating my best friends birthday yesterday and we were a party of 6. I just want to preface this by saying that the service was absolutely amazing, the server was really apologetic of things that were out of her control and checked in with us multiple times. The bar on the other hand was an absolute disaster, our party ordered 3 strawberry lemon drop martinis with a sugar rim and the server notified us that there was no strawberry, then the server had to come back again because the bar didn’t notify her that they ran out of Tito’s, then when the martini’s finally came out about 20 minutes later there was no sugar rim and it just tasted like vodka lemonade. We got a second round of drinks and instead of martini glasses they came in plastic cups and they looked like lemon drop shots instead of an actual cocktail, we were so appalled about that and we let our server know and she brought us back three brand new drinks in martini glasses which actually tasted like lemon drop martinis instead of vodka lemonade. The food was great, I have no complaints about that at all, all of our food came out correct and tasted great. We proceeded to ask for a manager towards the end of the night and we gave her feedback on everything, our whole table is in the industry and we understand things like this happen as we are all servers and bartenders but the manager seemed really over it and her apology was lackluster as she had already had multiple complaints about the bar, we had overheard the table next to us complaining as well, the tab ended up coming out to about $500 for the 6 of us which is no problem at all, but if we’re paying a premium for a product the level of quality should have been better as we came with high expectations since we had heard great things about the establishment, it was my first time there and the birthday girl and the rest of our party walked away with a sour taste in our mouths. They did comp a round of drinks but for all of that both rounds should have been comped at least. None of this is the servers fault, she was amazing, but the next time you want to go please have cocktails at another spot or pregame before you go, the cocktail experience is lacking a lot and they need some...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at the Moshulu in Philadelphia for a date night with my wife, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we stepped onboard, we were enchanted by the nautical-themed atmosphere that added a unique touch to the evening.
The food at Moshulu was absolutely delightful. The nautical-themed menu offered a variety of options, and we were thrilled with our choices. My wife opted for the salmon, and she couldn't stop raving about how amazing it was. As for myself, I went with the red snapper, and it was truly incredible - cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Before our main courses, we decided to start with two sushi rolls, and they were nothing short of awesome. The freshness of the ingredients and the expert preparation made for a fantastic beginning to the meal.
The service at Moshulu was top-notch. Our server, Mariah, was attentive and friendly, making sure our glasses were never empty and that we had everything we needed. She was knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations. Furthermore, the manager on duty, Justian, went above and beyond to make our evening special. He was incredibly accommodating and made us feel like valued guests throughout the night.
To add to the already wonderful ambiance, live music was provided by the Kat Rivers Duo (Kat and Eddy). Their performance was outstanding and added a pleasant and relaxing vibe to the entire evening. The duo was not only talented but also interactive, accepting a few song requests, which made the experience even more memorable.
Our date night at the Moshulu was an absolute success. The delicious food, excellent service from Mariah and Justian, and the enjoyable live music by the Kat Rivers Duo created a truly unforgettable atmosphere. If you're looking for a place in Philadelphia with excellent food, drinks, music, and a delightful nautical theme, Moshulu is the perfect choice. We can't wait to return for another...
