I literally had to pull over to write this review. Today is Tuesday, July 16th, and I’ve been thinking about their smoked salmon sandwich since last night; I literally woke up this morning determined to go and get me one. I get up, I get my special needs son dressed (which is always a hassle) and I make my way towards The Bake Shop; please note that I do not live in the city of Philadelphia, I am traveling all the way to their shop, simply because I love their smoked salmon sandwich! I place my order as I’m driving to the destination, and just as I am almost there, I received an email stating that my order has been canceled. Shocked and confused, I call The Bake Shop to see what’s going on. I was told that they are no longer “doing sandwiches” at this time of the day. HUHN?! It’s literally 1:22pm, the start of the afternoon, and you guys aren’t making sandwiches? Not only is this insane, it’s laughable. So now the money is out of my account and I have to wait for a refund, and me and my son are sitting in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, as I am bewildered and trying to figure out what to eat. Thanks a lot!

I believe the reason I can only give this bakery shop for three stars for now is because we probably come here too late so we couldn't try their most popular bakery items (Sticky buns & Babka muffin). We ordered "Apricot scone" & "Walnut oat bar" with a cup of cold brewed coffee for our first time visit to have our dessert/coffee/afternoon tea time. [Apricot scone]: I'm not a big fan of apricot, but this was the option left with the fruit topping. Their scone was unexpectedly soft & was not too sweet, which made me want to come back to try their other scones. [Walnut oat bar]: It had a thin layer of jam in the middle part of the bar (probably strawberry jam) and it was pretty sweet. The oat layers were also sweeten and covered with powder sugar, which made the entire bar too sweet. It was too heavy & dense to me to eat the entire piece or without coffee/unsweetened drinks. My advice is that you should visit this place early if you want to get their signature/popular bakery items. And we're planning to come back one more time to get the full experience!

My daughter and I were staying on this side of town and she found this cute bakery. While it is a small establishment it has a lot of goodies to choose from! We had the bacon, egg, & cheese sandwich with Jam and it was DELICIOUS!!! The bacon was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. We also went with the avocado, feta, tomato, Sriracha, and egg toast. This to me is not your basic avocado toast, it is on another level type of toast! Perfectly cooked egg to where it was still a little runny when you cut it and the drippings got on the toast and made the experience 100x better!!! Lastly, we left with a cranberry walnut scones. While I’ve never had a scone before it was super sweet to me ( I no longer eat sugar so anything is sweet to me) however, my daughter loved it! This bakery shop is definitely one you need to try and come back to taste all of their yummy treats. Be warned, there is a wait time due to them being busy…for a good reason!

Based off other reviews I am not the first person to run into this problem – I placed an ordered and prepaid using ritual; shortly after I received a text stating that my order was confirmed, and it would be ready at 10:34am. I arrived at 10:36, checked the table for my order and thought that it must not be ready yet, so I went back outside. I ended up waiting about 15 minutes before my boyfriend went inside to inquire about the order. They stated that they never received the order and asked if they could see the confirmation for it. Someone else checked the online orders and found my order within seconds. We received a “sorry” and were told it would be ready within 5 minutes. After another 15 minutes of waiting outside in 28 degrees our order was finally finished. So all in all the food was okay. Would I be willing to wait outside for 30 minutes for it again? Absolutely not.

Just some business advice for the owner/managers – cut back on the third-party ordering apps if you can not keep up with all of the orders coming in. Maybe invest in some website updates that will allow orders to be placed directly through your site and use one other site for deliveries. Also, look into bettering your customer service; expecting someone to wait outside for a mediocre breakfast sandwich in the cold because of your employees mistake is...

I have been coming to the Bakeshop of 20th for a few years now, originally to pick up baked goods on my way to the office. Now that I’m remote and live nearby, I come most days of the week and have had the pleasure of getting to know the staff, timing of food, my preferences etc.

Aside from the delicious pastries (specifically the lemon poppy muffins, turnovers, poptarts, walnut oats bars, and pies), the life of this institution is the staff. Between the banter, singing, laughter and connection to their regulars, you can tell they genuinely care and are also close with one another. I see the fun they have as another way they turn a wildly under-appreciated job into something more enjoyable. They are why I keep coming back.

It’s frustrating to see reviews like those from M. Levine, as he clearly isn’t aware that you can order ahead for pickups, which I typically do, or he doesn't appreciate that a weekend morning may have a longer wait. The staff is always doing their best to accommodate everyone, while baking and preparing for the rest of the day. If you don’t rush to judgment, like the reviewer mentioned above, you may find that this bakery has a lot to offer and just may become one of your new...
