I hate to give this place a 1 star review as I don't believe one bad apple reflects on everything else, but I do believe the severity of the situation demands such. Our food was incredible, the place had a great atmosphere and our server was a sweetheart. Absolute sweetheart. Everything else was 5 stars. The brunette/black haired bartender this past Sunday...Not so much. She came over to the table(mind you, she wasn't our server) to demand we leave with our service animal. Chance is a 5lb dog who doesn't make a sound. He was just sitting there looking around. When she told us they don't allow dogs inside the restaurant I explained to her he is a service animal. At that point she asked for documentation explaining such which although my boyfriend was more than happy to provide, is illegal discrimination against persons with disability. I told her that it was a violation of civil rights to even ask for any such documentation as disabilities are a protect class(same as gender, sexual orientation, etc.) under the American Disabilities Act while my boyfriend pulled it up. I do understand that some people don't know all federal laws or nuances and that's fine. But when we have technology at hand ALL the time with cellphones, it's absolutely unacceptable for her to continue to demand we leave in the middle of our meal(yes, we were already eating). All she had to do was say, "I'm not familiar with such laws, I would need to double check," walk away, go on her phone, look it up, realize she was wrong, come back and apologize. Unfortunately, her ego got in the way and she became defensive, hostile and quite rude, telling us not to come back. I truly hope that this was indeed just her personal ego and not the stance of management. It's OKAY TO BE WRONG! It's NOT OKAY TO HARASS customers with disabilities. My only intent with this review is to help management address such ignorance and help their staff while they work not only at their establishment, but also invest in developing individuals moving forward in...
Read moreVisited The Rook for dinner on a Saturday night. There were no reservations available inside but we were able to snag a table outside which I didn’t mind because the music inside was really loud. The interior is really nice and has a cool vibe. It definitely seems to cater to the college crowd as the majority of patrons looked to be in their early to mid twenties.
I ordered the Chicken Cheesesteak sandwich with potato fries and it was delicious! It had the perfect cheese to chicken ratio. The best part about all of their sandwiches, is that it comes on a fresh seeded roll. I read some other reviews saying the portions are small but I disagree...I was full after eating half of it!
Our waiter was Billy and he was fantastic! He was very friendly and attentive. We were the only people sitting outside so I worried that we would get forgotten about but that wasn’t the case. Billy checked up on us just the right amount of times.
COVID: They have paper menus and serve the food on plastic plates. Even the condiments come in plastic containers. That was a nice touch because I haven’t found another restaurant in Manayunk that does that. My only complaint is that when I went to the bathroom, the bartender was wearing his mask under his nose.
The Rook has definitely become one of my favorite spots in Manayunk and I can’t...
Read moreI had been for lunch and it was pleasant. Our dinner was not. I can excuse the loud engagement party cause engagement parties are loud. No problem. I'm a full time musician who works events like that.
My problem is the food and kitchen. My girlfriend's sister was hanging for the weekend and the menu here had something that appealed to ALL of us.
We ordered three sandwiches and after 70 minutes hadn't gotten our food. Four tables that were sat after us ordered and ate (one table paid and left) the same sandwiches we ordered (i asked one of them to make sure my eyes didnt decive me). Even our server told us she didn't know what the problem was before we asked where our food was.
To be clear: our server was great. Our drinks were out quickly and she checked on us regularly. At one point she came over to tell us our food would be out soon. We waited another twenty minutes before inquiring again - we had noticed that a table that ordered after us and got their food had ordered more food that was starting to come out - at which point our server, who was visibly embarrassed understood our frustration and our request to pay for our drinks and leave.
I'm very upset because my lunches there have been top notch. I was hoping this would be a new date night spot for when I didn't have a gig....
