We have been going to Golden Wok for 15+ years, and it has always been consistently good until it recently came under new ownership. Tried it over the summer and some traditional dishes had been changed (for example the crab puffs, which were my absolute favorite and set the precedent for crab puffs everywhere else had their recipe change and were completely ruined). We decided to give them another chance on Christmas eve as it has been our tradition to dine in there for years. I called at noon on Christmas eve day to find out if we needed to make a reservation or place an order for take out for later in the evening. The new owner explained that they didnt take reservations and that it was first come first serve. We arrived at 5 P.M. and walked in to a half empty restaurant when the woman at the register informed us that they were no longer seating people for the rest of the night. I explained to her that we had called earlier and werent informed that they would stop seating people. She said there was nothing they could do because they took too many takeout orders, so they closed the dining room to their longtime customers. We watched them turn away family after family as we sat in the car dumbfounded, angry, and scrambling to find somewhere else for Christmas eve dinner. The woman at the counter did not offer to make it right. Thankfully Desert Jade on Indian School and 32nd street knows how to run a Chinese restaurant on Christmas Eve. They were able to seat us with a full house and saved our Christmas eve without reservation. from the looks of disappointment on the faces of my family and those leaving the restaurant, Golden Wok lost a lot of loyal...
Read moreOne of my favorite Chinese restaurants. The menu is to be expected from an american Chinese restaurant with all the classics.
I dine here with family and friends at least once a month to get my fix. I judge most Chinese restaurants based on the following:
Fried Rice (Any preference) BBQ Pork Garlic, Sesame, or Spicy dish (Chicken or Beef) Chow Mien (Any preference) Shrimp or Crab ( if available )
** Services ** Location
I chose those items due to both their average frequency on a menu but also due to each having specific qualities to judge. Having sampled all the sweet, spicy, savory, crunchy, and chewy texture and flavors that most similar restaurant serve... this one is in at least the top 25% I have dined at in my lifetime across the country.
Prices are fair but it can get pricey to feed a family of four or more as its easy to get carried away.
Loses one star ( would be 1/2 a star if Google allowed ) only due to not having a delivery service, sometimes having their occasional "off day", and having longer than usual holds on credit. However, even their "off day" is better than other Chinese restaurants in the north eastern quadrant of the greater Phoenix area, but take cash if you are using a prepaid card or have a budget limit set within your credit card because while they only collect what is on the tab there could be a slightly larger hold on funds...
Read moreMy boyfriend took me here since we were in the area. He had been here before, but it was my first time. Our waiter was friendly and the atmosphere is beautiful and inviting. Prices were reasonable and their lunch combos are great. I orderer Mongolian Beef: I was surprised at how good that meat was and tender too. My son ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken: light, crispy batter with an amazing sauce. Probably one of the best I had in a while. My boyfriend ordered Thai Curry Chicken: packed with flavor!!! not spicy, nice size tender chunks of meat and goes great with the white rice. Lunch combos are between $9 to $13 and they come with a crab puff and spring roll. They weren't greasy, but lightly fried to a golden crisp. Overall my favorite dish that I tasted on my visit had to be the Thai Curry Chicken I mean when I say that was packed with flavor.. I mean it! The waiter recommended the curry shrimp next visit because we will be back. Everyone was humble/friendly greeting us and saying thank you as we left it felt like a family owned business. We had a good experience. I would say give this place a shot and if you enjoy indian cuisine like I do I highly recommend ordering the Thai Curry Chicken when you go!!!!!!!!!! I could do without the chow mein personally, but everything else was...
